About the role
This hourly, non-exempt position works with direct and indirect supervision to supervise craft employees assigned to a construction paving crew.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Project Superintendent to develop and maintain a complete understanding of project plans and specifications.
- Develop and implement plans to meet or exceed specifications, safety requirements, and production paces.
- Supervise assigned crew members to ensure safe, productive, and timely completion of high-quality work.
- Prioritize, schedule, and communicate plans and tasks to crew members, customers, and inspecting agencies.
- Plan work schedules, including manpower levels, material quantities, trucking, equipment requirements, and traffic control needs.
- Monitor crew performance and productivity to ensure compliance with project rules, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Complete daily quantity reports with required diary notes and accurate employee time reports.
- Advise superintendents and project management of potential problems, work interferences, or schedule difficulties; assist in resolving issues.
- Maintain positive relationships with other departments to support the construction schedule.
- Promote positive public relations and ensure a safe working environment.
- Exercise proper care, maintenance, and operation of company equipment.
- Work more than 40 hours per week and non-traditional hours, including nights, Saturdays, and occasionally Sundays.
Knowledge
- Safety regulations, project scheduling, cost control, plans, specifications, special provisions, and project phases.
- Equipment, tools, and materials required for the project.
- Haul time and traffic control requirements.
- Communication hand signals.
Skills
- Ability to learn, follow, and enforce company policies and procedures.
- Plan and coordinate operations; supervise and evaluate crew performance.
- Create construction plans to minimize traffic disruptions and maximize safety.
- Cross-train crew members on all aspects of construction tasks.
- Work with indirect supervision and use heavy job field applications as required.
- Use a computer and related office equipment.
Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record per company standards.
- Basic math skills.
- Successfully completed PennDOT Flagger Training Course.
- CPR and first aid trained; must obtain and maintain all mandatory training.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of construction experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Requirements
- Constant (67–100%): Ability to walk and work on uneven terrain.
- Constant (67–100%): Ability to work in a field environment with exposure to dust, inclement weather, extreme heat and cold.

- Constant (67–100%): Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
