FOREMAN OUTSIDE MACHINIST

About the role

Supervises, assigns, coordinates, and evaluates semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel according to their skill, experience, and job knowledge. Supervises and trains employees to improve quality and quantity of work performed. Recommends training to enhance skill and productivity of employees and assists in the development of training procedures. Breaks broad strategies down to practical action plans and ensures employees are trained to perform these plans.

Responsible for complying with all technical aspects of the job, including adherence to all drawings and procedures. Responsible for manufacturing, installation, operation, testing, and process operations that have a significant financial impact on the company's performance. Supervises qualified trades staff, monitoring job and budget performance for all shifts.

An incumbent must possess a thorough technical knowledge of the trade in the area of responsibility and have a solid educational base, generally gained through successful completion of the Apprentice program or the equivalent in education and training. A candidate without an Apprentice Certificate or equivalent should have a minimum of 3 years of trade experience, preferably with some exposure to production planning and support functions. The candidate must be able to supervise the work of others, motivate and train employees, and possess strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Depending on the assigned area, specific technical, medical, and physical requirements may apply.

Requirements

• Must have one of the following:
  • BS/Apprentice Certificate, or
  • High School diploma and 4 years combined manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, or military experience, or
  • Associate Degree in a Trade/Technical field and 3 years of relevant manufacturing, shipbuilding, trade, and/or military experience
• Internal candidates must have a superior attendance and disciplinary record:
  • No more than 3 unexcused absences in the last 180-day period
  • No safety DANS that result in a disciplinary layoff in the last 180-day period
  • No more than 2 total DANS in the last 180-day period (excluding lost tool)
• Must be willing and able to work any shift assigned

Nice to Have

• Bachelors/Apprentice Certificate, or High School diploma and 6 years of related trade experience
• Strong working knowledge of the ship construction process with an emphasis on machinery
• Experience as a work leaderman and/or performing Supervisor Re-Rate duties
