Food Services Cook

About the role

The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty since the 1870s. We meet essential needs and create transformative communities for men, women, children, and families in New York, aiming to overcome homelessness and poverty and foster flourishing.

Responsibilities

• Prepare meals in accordance with planned menus.
• Maintain a clean and sanitized work area.
• Wear proper attire, including uniforms, aprons, smocks, gloves, hairnets/hats, etc.
• Monitor thermometers in freezer/refrigerator.
• Check and put away incoming stock in proper storage areas.
• Control inventory, maintaining, tracking, and rotating stock, and discarding outdated and damaged stock.
• Participate in employee staff meetings and trainings.
• Perform duties such as reaching, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

• Embrace The Bowery Mission's Statement of Faith.
• 1 - 2 years relevant experience in food service setting.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• (NY) Food Handler Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Prior knowledge in commercial cooking and lead cook responsibilities preferred.
• Knowledge in food and workplace safety.
• Experience working with the homeless of New York City.
• Proficiency with computers and smartphones.

Benefits

Salary: $21.63 per hour.

Schedule

A routing schedule with one weekend off per month. Possible shifts range from 5:00am to 1:30pm, 11:00am to 7:30pm, or 11:30am to 8:00pm.
