Purpose

The Food Service Director oversees the operation of the food service program, acts as the authorized representative of the Sponsoring Food Authority (SFA) to the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), and is responsible for compliance with state and federal regulations and requirements related to the food service program.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and administer school food and nutrition program to provide nutritious meals and safeguard the health of students, adults, and guests.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to school, Health Department, and KSDE standards.
  • Communicate effectively with school personnel, students, and parents.
  • React to change productively and complete tasks as assigned.
  • Provide leadership to employees.
  • Use professional discretion and observe procedures of confidentiality in administering the program.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of St. Mary's Parish School.

Qualifications

  • Experience in child nutrition program or institutional food preparation and kitchen management.
  • Personnel and management skills.
  • Record keeping, math, and accounting skills.
  • Ability to interact with students and staff in a consistently pleasant manner.
  • Tuberculosis Inoculation Certificate on file in the Parish Office (after employment offer is made).
  • Desire to continue career improvement.
  • Help with baking or serving as needed in the event of absence of other key kitchen personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Aid the school principal in evaluating and hiring new staff.
  • Assist in salary determinations by compiling a yearly budget.
  • Maintain cost information concerning meals.
  • Evaluate and recommend prices to be charged for student and guest meals.
  • Plan menus and write production records based on menus for each month.
  • Maintain required records to ensure meals served meet requirements for reimbursement.
  • Write weekly order for the food vendor and forward to kitchen manager.
  • Work closely with kitchen manager in evaluating menus to ensure acceptability by students.
  • Schedule meetings, no less than monthly, with the kitchen manager.
  • Complete the following administrative reports and documents:
    • Program Agreement and its attachments and other periodic reports as required by KSDE.
    • Monthly reimbursement claims supported by documentation of Daily Record of Meals Served.
    • KSDE monthly and annual summaries of food service program activities which include income, expenses, and other data supported by Daily Income Record.
  • Pay all bills monthly and complete monthly ledger sheet.
  • Responsible for end of the year inventory.
  • Responsible for the approval and verification of applications for Child Nutrition Program free and reduced price benefits.
  • Update Registration List at the end of each year, inputting ending cash for all accounts, and updating account numbers.
  • Work Final Registration as Food Service representative.
  • Cooperate and be available for the KSDE School Food Service Consultant during the annual review of the food service program.
  • Take action to implement recommendations.
  • Maintain recipe book deleting any unused recipes, and creating or modifying recipes as needed to meet needs.
  • Determine summer KSDE classes for other staff members.
  • Adhere to all school health and safety policies and follow the HACCP plan.
  • Yearly evaluate the school wellness policy with the other wellness committee members and submit it to KSDE.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the school principal.

Physical Requirements / Environmental Conditions

  • Requires prolonged standing or sitting.
  • Requires concentration in a noisy environment.
  • Requires flexibility in work hours as required if staff absences occur.

Schedule

  • Approximately 30 hours per week August through May on student school days, with additional days as needed to complete reports and process applications and orders for the school lunch program.

Pay

According to the classified salary.
