Food Reporter, Arts & Culture (2 roles; 1 Full Time, Part Time)
This is a hybrid position based in San Francisco. The successful candidate will be required to join The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
About the role
KQED seeks an experienced reporter capable of reporting daily news and feature stories in an authoritative and conversational manner that connects with audiences. Reporters must be proficient at writing text stories and producing content for audio, online, and social media platforms, including spots, features, cut-and-copy, voicers, and live on-air debriefings. This role requires working across departments, collaborating with colleagues of varying experience levels, and meeting deadlines under pressure.
The Food Reporter is part of the Arts & Culture team, responsible for comprehensively and accurately reporting on the arts and culture that shape life in the Bay Area. This role focuses on the diverse food scene, including restaurants, chefs, pop-ups, immigrant-run food businesses, food justice advocates, and other changemakers. The reporter will develop sources, break news, and provide unique analysis while producing content for digital, radio, social video, live events, and special series.

Responsibilities
- Research, report, and write daily food stories for the website and file regular spots for radio newscasts.
- Appear on various KQED platforms (social video, podcasts, panel discussions) to bring food coverage to a wider audience.
- Assist editors and the KQED News team in developing coverage strategies and daily assignments.
- File stories online, adhering to protocol for images, captions, and other content management concerns.
- Participate in special editorial series, live events, and other projects designed to meet the evolving needs of KQED’s audiences.
- Maintain a directory of sources, regularly dine at a wide range of Bay Area restaurants, and attend food-related events.
- Produce journalism across platforms, including text, audio, video, email newsletters, and apps.
- Contribute to news planning and stay informed on daily local and national news through multiple sources.
- Adapt stories for social video and radio, including live on-air debriefings.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of professional experience as a broadcast, print, and/or online journalist, including news reporting, editing, and production.
- Excellent reporting and news writing skills, with the ability to write quickly and accurately across platforms.
- Strong command of journalistic principles, ethics, and standards.
- Proficiency in radio production techniques and on-air voicing skills.
- Fluency in web, mobile, and social media editing and publishing.
- Ability to interview and communicate with a wide variety of individuals.
- Strong news judgment and editing skills.
- Ability to research and communicate using mobile and digital tools.
- Proven collaboration skills to work with colleagues across departments and partner organizations.
- Ability to meet deadlines, stay organized, and prioritize tasks when working on multiple projects.
- Deep knowledge of the Bay Area food scene, including restaurants, chefs, pop-ups, immigrant-run businesses, and food justice advocates.
Pay
Hourly rate: $44.71–$52.88.
Schedule
This is a part-time, limited-term position with a hybrid schedule between KQED’s San Francisco headquarters and remote work.
