About the Role

This role is responsible for all aspects of patient meal service, working closely with dietitians and ensuring meals align with clinical diet orders and patient needs.

Responsibilities

  • Follow departmental infection control policies and procedures, including hand washing, personal hygiene, and uniform cleanliness.
  • Collect patient meal selections at the bedside using CBORD software on a tablet computer, guiding patients based on diet restrictions.
  • Exhibit exemplary customer service during interactions with patients, families, and hospital personnel, maintaining positive eye contact and responsiveness to patient needs.
  • Maintain a pleasant and cheerful demeanor when answering phones or interacting with others, following guidelines for equipment use and care.
  • Assemble patient trays in the main kitchen, ensuring accuracy and appearance, and deliver them using two patient identifiers for safety.
  • Revisit patients after meals to address missing items or concerns and assist with meal preparation (e.g., opening packages, inserting straws, cutting meats).
  • Pour coffee or hot water at the bedside as required.
  • Collect soiled trays after mealtimes and return them to the dishroom for washing and sanitizing; assist in stripping trays and maintaining sanitation of meal service carts.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential patient information and verify charges during end-of-day closing procedures.
  • Handle diet requests from nursing units promptly, following departmental procedures.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, education sessions, and staff development programs.
  • Operate and maintain equipment safely according to department procedures.
  • Accept schedule changes and additional assignments as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • 2 years of prior cold food production experience in a healthcare setting or related experience.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, reading, and writing) to follow instructions and interact with others.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematical skills for simple calculations.
  • Ability to safely handle knives and meat slicers.

Physical Demands

  • Daily physical activity, including standing and walking for more than 7 hours per shift (full-time or part-time).
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull carts, pallets, food supplies, and disposable supplies (occasionally up to 50 pounds, frequently up to 30 pounds, and/or continuously up to 10 pounds).
  • Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises; requires adherence to safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
