Folder Gluer Machine Operator

About the role

Operate a variety of Folder Gluer and auxiliary binding machines to produce completed printed products such as books, catalogs, manuals, directories, magazines, and other materials.

Responsibilities

• Set up, adjust, and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces, or other attachments (e.g., inkjet and mailing devices, case making & decorating equipment, folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines).
• Set up automatic bindery machines containing multiple functions and station capabilities (e.g., power paper cutters, power collators and gatherers, power folders, power speed binder) which can be electromechanically combined to process printed sheets into final products.
• Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) with interrelated process stations to perform functions such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines, or catalogs.
• Make adjustments to coordinate multiple work stations on a single machine.
• Direct crew through all aspects of production.
• Monitor quality, output, and productivity.
• Inspect equipment for safety issues.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret written work orders or job specifications containing bindery requirements, including the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
• Independently make decisions on the type of equipment to be used.
• Calculate distances, clearances, and fits in combining machines.
• Skill in using the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain bindery machines.
• General knowledge of complex bindery machines (e.g., fully automatic binding machines, multiple station collators, multiple folding units) to perform standard and specialized folds of printed materials.
• Thorough knowledge of set up, operating requirements, procedures, capabilities, and limitations of bindery machines for folding, collating, and cutting printed materials.
• Knowledge of quality and machining requirements for various coated and uncoated paper stocks.
• Skill in setting up and adjusting machines for finishing operations, refining adjustments based on paper stock weight, color, machinability, and quality to prevent machining impressions.

Pay

The pay range for this role is $23.25 - $36.25 per hour. The actual rate may vary based on education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, and location.

A $2.00 per hour shift differential is provided for the 2nd shift (2 PM - 10 PM).
