Fly Fishing Guide

Fly Fishing Educator position training begins in 2026 with launch in 2027. Training includes attending Uncharted's events and a July training camp in Idaho Springs at the Women's Hunting Skills Camp.

About The Role

Deckers is one of the most iconic fly fishing locations in Colorado—and one of the most intimidating for new anglers. Our goal here is not to guide tourists chasing trophy trout. Our goal is to teach women how to fish confidently, ethically, and independently on pressured water. This role is ideal for a guide who loves teaching, understands how to progress students from beginner to intermediate skills, and wants to be part of a supportive, women-led teaching team. If you enjoy helping anglers move from “I’m nervous” to “I can do this on my own,” this role is for you.

Primary Location: Deckers, CO (South Platte River) & Staunton State Park
Season: April–September
Time Commitment: Variable; Fly Fishing 101 & 201 classes, primarily weekends

Responsibilities

• Fly Fishing 101 & 201 Instruction
  • Teach Fly Fishing 101 (beginner) and Fly Fishing 201 (intermediate) classes in Deckers, CO
  • Fly Fishing 201 focuses on:
    • Reading technical water
    • Line control and mending
    • Fly selection and rig adjustments
    • Fishing pressured trout confidently
  • Classes are typically held on weekends
  • Class size and curriculum are standardized
• Event Support & Scheduling
  • Teach classes scheduled through Uncharted Outdoorswomen
  • Support lead guides as needed
  • Assist with fly fishing camps and retreats
  • Communicate clearly with students before and after class
• Community & Education Focus
  • Foster a welcoming, low-pressure learning environment
  • Support returning students as they progress through skill levels
  • Uphold Uncharted’s values of inclusion, safety, and conservation
• Gear & Logistics
  • Borrow company rods and gear (from Black Hawk, CO) or use personal gear and receive gear “rent” compensation
  • Maintain professional appearance and organized gear
• Content & Communication
  • Take 2 photos per class (1 group photo, 1 educational or inspiring moment)
  • Upload photos to the shared Google folder
  • Write occasional educational blogs related to fly fishing or river skills
  • Communicate consistently in the Team Slack channel

Pay

This role offers two compensation tiers based on responsibility. Guides may work in one or both tiers.

• Tier 1: Teaching & Support Guide
  • $15/hour for teaching Fly Fishing 101 or 201 classes
  • Additional commissions based on the number of participants enrolled
  • Uncharted Outdoorswomen handles scheduling, event filling, marketing, and follow-up emails
  • Ideal for guides who want to teach without managing logistics
• Tier 2: Lead Guide / Event Builder
  • Up to 30% commission on gross revenue for events you:
    • Create and schedule
    • Market and fill
    • Coordinate logistics for
  • Includes direct communication with clients, guides, and partners
  • Higher earning potential tied to community-building and outreach

Requirements

• CPR & First Aid certified
• GPS device (Garmin InReach, Zoleo, etc.)
• Comfortable teaching on technical, pressured water
• Technologically savvy (website dashboards, schedules, Slack)

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate

• Lives near Deckers, Denver, or Pine, CO
• Confident teaching both beginners and intermediate anglers
• Communicates clearly and professionally
• Patient, inclusive, and trauma-informed in teaching
• Does not work for another fly fishing outfitter
• Can manage group dynamics on busy public water

Not Required

• Guide school (not required in Colorado)
• Traditional private guiding experience
