Manatee Technical College’s Florida Law Enforcement Academy prepares students for employment and advanced training as Law Enforcement Officers in the State of Florida. Recruits receive training in firearm proficiency, defensive driving, defensive tactics, first responder skills, and academic areas of criminal justice.

Program Content

The 770-hour program consists of the following courses:

  • Introduction to Law Enforcement – 12 hours
  • Communication – 24 hours
  • Legal – 64 hours
  • Interviewing and Report Writing – 56 hours
  • Fundamentals of Patrol – 40 hours
  • Serving Your Community – 34 hours
  • Crimes Against Persons – 48 hours
  • Crimes Involving Property and Society – 12 hours
  • Crime Scene Follow-up Investigations – 34 hours
  • Traffic Incidents – 12 hours
  • Traffic Stops – 24 hours
  • Traffic Crash Investigations – 30 hours
  • DUI Traffic Stops – 24 hours
  • Critical Incidents – 44 hours
  • Law Enforcement Vehicle Operations – 48 hours
  • First Aid for Criminal Justice Officers – 40 hours
  • Criminal Justice Firearms – 80 hours
  • Criminal Justice Defensive Tactics – 80 hours
  • Conducted Electrical Weapon/Dart-Firing Stun Gun – 4 hours
  • Criminal Justice Officer Physical Fitness Training/Law Enforcement – 60 hours

Certification & Licensure

Successful completion of the program qualifies graduates to take the State Certification Examination for Law Enforcement, required to become a certified law enforcement officer in Florida.

Co-Curricular Activities

SkillsUSA and/or HOSA are the approved co-curricular career and technical student organizations, providing leadership training and reinforcing specific career and technical skills.

Schedule

  • Times: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Start Dates: August, January
  • Program Length: Full-Time: 770 hours – approximately 6 months
  • Location: MTC East Campus, 5540 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Bradenton, FL 34211

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Pass the Florida Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) (unless statutorily exempt)
  • Good moral character
  • No felony convictions involving false statements or spouse battery
  • Good physical condition
  • Pass a drug screen
  • Successfully complete a polygraph and criminal history background check
  • Pass the physical assessment test (all 5 absolute standards)

Pay

  • Tuition (Florida residents): $2.92 per hour ($3,233.40 total, including $60 facility and equipment use fee)
  • Tuition (Non-Florida residents): $11.71 per hour

  • Background Check/Fingerprints: $70.00–$90.00
  • Polygraph: $175.00
  • Driver’s License History: $25.00
  • Drug Screening: $40.00
  • Physical with EKG: $120.60
  • FBAT Testing Fee: $45.00
  • State Officer Certification Exam: $100.00
  • Uniform Estimate (shirts, pants, shoes): $575.00

Estimated Total Cost of Program: $4,449.00

All pre-admission fees are non-refundable and not covered by financial aid. Prices are subject to change.
