Basic Function
The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining all floor surfaces throughout the facility in a clean, safe, and attractive condition. Duties include cleaning, buffing, stripping, waxing, and maintaining floors in accordance with current federal, state, and local regulations, facility policies, and infection control standards to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of all floor surfaces, including vinyl, tile, carpet, and other flooring materials.
- Operate and maintain floor care equipment such as buffers, burnishers, extractors, scrubbers, and vacuums in a safe and efficient manner.
- Strip, wax, seal, and polish floors according to established schedules and procedures.
- Shampoo and extract carpets as needed.
- Maintain hallways, resident rooms, common areas, offices, dining rooms, and other assigned areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Follow proper procedures for the use and storage of cleaning chemicals and disinfectants in accordance with safety regulations and manufacturer guidelines.
- Report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, maintenance concerns, and supply needs to the Director of Environmental Services or appropriate department.
- Absorb and assist with moving furniture and equipment as necessary to complete floor care duties.
- Maintain cleaning equipment in good working order and report repair needs promptly.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents, and emergency cleaning situations to maintain resident and staff safety.
- Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with residents, families, visitors, and staff members in a professional and courteous manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident and facility information in accordance with HIPAA and facility policies.
- Participate in mandatory in-service training, safety programs, and departmental meetings.
- Absorb and assist in emergency evacuation procedures when necessary.
- Complete all assigned documentation and work records accurately and timely.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Environmental Services or Administrator.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous floor care or housekeeping experience preferred, especially in a healthcare or long-term care setting.
- Ability to operate floor care equipment safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, floor finishes, and safety procedures preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to push and pull floor care equipment safely.
- Ability to work around cleaning chemicals and odors.
Working Conditions
- Works throughout the facility with exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, wet floors, and varying temperatures.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, and flexible shifts.
