About the role
The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining and restoring all floor surfaces in a healthcare environment to ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary facility for patients, staff, and visitors. This position performs specialized cleaning and floor care procedures in compliance with healthcare standards, infection prevention protocols, and company policies.
Responsibilities
- Clean, maintain, and restore all types of flooring, including tile, vinyl, carpet, terrazzo, wood, and concrete.
- Perform scheduled floor care procedures such as stripping, waxing, buffing, burnishing, and deep scrubbing.
- Operate and maintain floor care equipment, including automatic scrubbers, burnishers, extractors, and vacuums.
- Follow all safety procedures and infection control standards as defined by OSHA, CDC, and facility policies.
- Safely mix and handle cleaning agents and disinfectants in accordance with manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Assist with daily cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, and spot-cleaning in high-traffic areas.
- Respond promptly to spills, biohazards, or emergency cleanups in coordination with Environmental Services (EVS) and clinical teams.
- Maintain organized and sanitary supply carts, closets, and equipment storage areas.
- Report equipment malfunctions, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to supervisors.
- Support EVS department goals and assist team members during peak cleaning periods or staff shortages.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of one (1) year of floor care or janitorial experience; healthcare experience highly preferred.
- Knowledge of hard surface floor care and carpet cleaning techniques.
- Ability to operate floor care equipment safely and efficiently.
- Understanding of infection control practices and universal precautions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Work performed in healthcare environments, including patient care areas.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, and biohazards.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to facility infection control protocols.
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting required.
