Floating LPN

About the role

Abilities First, Inc., an affiliate of the Abilities Partnership of the Hudson Valley, has been making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities for sixty years. We offer a wide variety of services including school and preschool programs, day habilitation, residential habilitation, community habilitation, and employment services. The Floating LPN’s primary responsibility is to provide medication administration to school, preschool, and satellite school locations, and to assist with coverage as needed due to call-outs and emergent issues as assigned by their supervisor. The Floating LPN’s home base will be Firemen’s Way School. When assigned elsewhere, the Floating LPN will receive mileage reimbursement for the difference from their typical daily commute.

Responsibilities

• Administer medications to children as ordered; ensuring all orders are up to date/on file and entered on the program’s medication records.
• Provide nursing care (scope of practice) to the students, provide emergency first aid, observe and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments to the parent/caregiver and School Nurse Coordinator.
• Maintain medication cart, Medication Administration Records, cleanliness of nursing office, nursing-related school supplies, and AED records.
• Maintain effective infection control practices, offering supports to staff on the importance of universal precautions.
• Train staff on school health care policy and procedures, health information on students as warranted, emergency treatments, and signs of illness (which may indicate that a student should not attend School/Preschool program).
• Obtain and maintain current physical and immunization records on file, complete yearly immunization surveys for New York State Health Department.
• Maintain all student’s health records, including any special needs/dietary, adaptive equipment, and confer with parents/caregivers to assure that all medical information is current.
• Participate in the intake process and IEP meetings as required.
• Notify parent/caregiver when a student is unwell, to ensure that the health care needs of the student are met; also conferring with parent/caregiver to ascertain if student should not be in the school/preschool program due to illness.
• Report all health-related concerns to the respective building administrator, School Nurse Coordinator, and staff as appropriate.
• Provide consultation and assist in referral of students to appropriate health care specialists as needed.
• Serve as the designated LPN for Day Camp programming during school breaks.
• Ensure all required trainings and certifications are current, and seek further support and training where needed.
• Adhere to agency Code of Legal and Ethical Behavior, performing responsibilities according to ethical and legal standards with honesty, integrity, fairness, good faith, and respect for others and the law.
• Follow all agency policy and procedures and demonstrate continuous regard to personal safety and the safety of others.
• Adhere to all state and local regulatory requirements in the school/preschool settings.
• Perform other appropriate job-related activities as requested by your supervisor or as circumstances warrant, including LPN coverage of other school sites during staffing emergencies.
• Incorporate CORE concepts of CQL’s person-centered excellence by respecting people’s concerns and responding accordingly and use “teachable moments” to assist people in understanding and exercising their rights.

Requirements

• Must hold a License of Practical Nurse by NYS Department of Health.
• Preferred experience working with children/young adults with developmental disabilities with special needs.
• Knowledge of applicable regulations, OCFS, OPWDD, NYSED.
• Must have a current NYS driver’s license, free of moving violations; deemed acceptable by our insurance carrier.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, squat, pivot, and grasp with both hands (to properly and safely perform techniques taught in CPR/First Aid, behavior intervention techniques, and lifting and carrying techniques).
• Lift individuals by using appropriate techniques, including but not limited to usage of tools to assist, such as the Hoyer Lift.
• Assist individuals in ambulation by providing physical assistance, including use of a gait belt or other equipment where necessary.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Ability to push, pull, and maneuver adults in wheelchairs.
• Possess verbal and written communication skills in English to ensure adequate regulatory documentation.

Pay

Salary Range: $26.75 - $27.75 per hour

Schedule

This is a 52-week position at 32.5 hours per week.
