Fleet Technician Welder

Hennepin County’s Public Works Administration department is hiring a Fleet Technician Welder to join the Fleet Services Maintenance division. This position will fabricate, repair, and modify a wide variety of county equipment, including trucks, trailers, snowplows, hydraulic systems, guardrails, bridges, and other essential Public Works assets.

In addition to the base wage, there is a $.50/hour premium for a Class A driver's license, $2.80/hour for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master's certification in automotive or heavy truck, and $1.10/hour for night shift differential pay.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding on various metals using MIG, stick, TIG, and acetylene welding equipment, cutting torches, shop tools, and other fabrication tools.
  • Perform straightening, shaping, brazing, tempering, cutting, and welding of varied metals for repair and fabrication tasks on trucks, snowplows, sanders, trailer hitches, tanks, under-body scrapers, hydraulic systems, signposts, guardrails, and bridges.
  • Read and interpret drawings and blueprints; estimate time and labor charges.
  • Order and maintain stock welding supplies.
  • Perform repairs from aerial buckets, snoopers, bridges, platforms, and confined spaces.
  • Conduct commercial vehicle inspections.
  • Perform light mechanical repair on fleet equipment as needed.

Requirements

  • Two or more years of journey-level welder experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit and a valid Class B driver's license within six months of employment.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Supply your own full complement of mechanic tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) welding certifications.
  • Knowledge of metals and alloys, and standard shop procedures and techniques used in welding, cutting, brazing, heating, and shaping.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision.
  • Ability to work from rough sketches, drawings, blueprints, verbal, and written instructions.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials and maintain routine records.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

Location and Schedule

This position is located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility.

Work hours are 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (first shift). This position requires availability for on-call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details will be provided upon hire.

About the Department

Fleet Services provides vehicles and equipment to county departments, including cars, trucks, vans, boats, trailers, on-road, and off-road equipment for conducting official county business. Fleet Services supports 6 business lines and 20 departments.

Core services include:

  • Maintenance and repair of 1,200 county vehicles and equipment.
  • Providing vehicles and equipment through the fleet motor pool, available at various Hennepin County facilities.
  • Asset management, budgeting, and reporting, including vehicle and equipment replacement, scheduling, forecasting, and analytics (e.g., fuel usage, vehicle location, driving habits).
  • Fuel management, fuel system management, consumables tracking, and reporting.
  • Specification development for procurement of vehicles and equipment with customer involvement to ensure cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable solutions.
