Job Overview

Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of SMSC-owned light, medium, and heavy vehicles, and equipment, including Emergency Services vehicles. Performs preventative maintenance to ensure that all vehicles are safe and mechanically sound.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled diagnostic and repair procedures on light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, vans, buses, generators, small engine, and heavy equipment owned by the SMSC.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on SMSC-owned vehicles, generators, heavy-equipment, and small engine equipment.
  • Completes repair orders ensuring that work performed and parts used are documented.
  • Maintains shop areas and tools/diagnostic equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Designs and fabricates tools and equipment.
  • Orders parts and supplies from authorized dealers.
  • May direct the activities of the Fleet Cleaning Specialist.
  • Plows snow.

Requirements

  • Technical school graduate with an automotive or truck degree, or 4 years of experience in an automotive or truck repair facility.
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Specialized knowledge of various types of vehicle diagnostic testing and programming tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Valid D driver’s license required upon hire.
  • Class A Driver's License Required - training provided by SMSC within 1 year of hire.
  • Industrial Truck Driving permit may be required (forklift) with training available.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of small engine repair.
  • Proficiency in maintaining safety while handling potential fumes, chemicals, odors, and/or noise.
  • Physical abilities to perform the required job duties with or without accommodations, including on feet 75% of time.
  • Capacity to handle and lift up to 75 lbs. as needed.
  • Ability to move in a variety of motions including bending, squatting, crawling, kneeling, twisting, pulling, and/ or pushing.
