Fleet Operations Director (3169)
Position Summary
The Fleet Operations Director is responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision for the company's fleet operations across all branches. This leader oversees the lifecycle management, utilization, maintenance, compliance, and operational performance of one of the nation's largest fleets of pumps, generators, bypass equipment, trench safety systems, frac tanks, and support equipment. This position partners closely with Operations, Branch Leadership, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Safety, Finance, and Sales to maximize fleet utilization, improve equipment reliability, reduce operating costs, and ensure fleet readiness to support customer demand. The Fleet Operations Director drives operational consistency, establishes fleet standards, develops maintenance programs, and implements continuous improvement initiatives that improve profitability and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute the company's long-term fleet strategy.
Establish fleet lifecycle management standards, including acquisition, deployment, maintenance, refurbishment, and retirement.
Optimize fleet utilization across all branch locations.
Analyze fleet performance and recommend capital investment strategies.
Standardize fleet specifications across all operating divisions.
Collaborate with Manufacturing on new equipment design improvements.
Develop standardized maintenance programs and preventive maintenance schedules.
Improve fleet uptime, availability, and equipment reliability.
Establish KPIs to measure fleet performance across all branches.
Lead initiatives to reduce equipment downtime and maintenance costs.
Ensure consistent operating procedures throughout the organization.
Drive Lean and continuous improvement initiatives within fleet operations.
Develop and manage fleet operating and capital budgets.
Analyze repair costs, maintenance trends, utilization rates, and return on investment.
Support annual capital planning and fleet replacement strategies.
Identify cost-saving opportunities through standardization, supplier negotiations, and process improvements.
Improve overall fleet productivity and asset utilization.
Lead and develop Regional Fleet Managers, Fleet Coordinators, and branch fleet personnel.
Create accountability through performance metrics and operational scorecards.
Coach and mentor operational leaders to improve fleet performance.
Build a culture focused on safety, ownership, continuous improvement, and customer service.
Support succession planning and employee development.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety standards.
Promote a culture of proactive safety throughout fleet operations.
Ensure preventive maintenance records and inspections are completed accurately.
Partner with Safety to investigate equipment-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
Partner with Branch Managers and Operations Managers to balance fleet demand across regions.
Work closely with Sales to support large customer projects and emergency response efforts.
Collaborate with Supply Chain on vendor relationships and equipment procurement.
Support Finance with fleet forecasting, depreciation planning, and asset reporting.
Partner with Engineering and Manufacturing on product improvements and new fleet initiatives.
Drive the adoption of fleet management technology and telematics.
Improve asset tracking, maintenance scheduling, and utilization reporting.
Utilize data analytics to support strategic decision-making.
Develop executive dashboards and operational reporting for senior leadership.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business, Operations Management, Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
10+ years of progressive leadership experience managing large equipment fleets or multi-site operations.
Experience managing heavy equipment, construction equipment, industrial pumps, generators, rental equipment, or related assets.
Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, capital planning, and cost management.
Proven experience leading multi-location operations.
Strong leadership, coaching, and change management skills.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ERP/fleet management systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MBA or advanced business degree.
Equipment rental industry experience.
Experience with dewatering, bypass pumping, power generation, or fluid management equipment.
Leverage in Lean Six Sigma certification.
Knowledge of telematics and predictive maintenance technologies.
