About the Role
The Mechanic Assistant provides services to all mechanics when needed and maintains all vehicle maintenance schedules. This role efficiently communicates and coordinates with Fleet Management about the purchase of parts as needed for repairs. This position reports to the Fleet Supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs maintenance repairs such as tune-ups, oil changes, tire and brake checks, spark plug replacements, and other similar tasks for all TOPC vehicles/assets
- Assists mechanics with electrical systems including replacing batteries, starters, and lights
- Test drives vehicles to ensure repairs are completed properly
- Cleans the shop and returns tools to proper location
- Maintains inventory for all TOPC vehicles/assets
- Inspects tools and equipment to ensure they are in working order
- Thrives with a team and under pressure in challenging environments
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of vehicle repair
- Excellent mechanical skills
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to use power and hand tools
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read service and repair manuals
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion
- Ability to work well with a team and under pressure in challenging environments
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Mechanical background in repair and preventative maintenance on vehicles and large equipment. High school diploma or equivalent required. 2-year minimum experience.
Skills & Certifications
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the automotive trade
- ASE certifications or equivalent
- Welding qualified preferred but not required
- Must be able to use computer diagnosis system
Special Requirements
- Must hold and maintain a valid Texas State Driver's license or obtain one within six months of hire
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and random screenings while employed
Physical Demands
- Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections
- Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions
- Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds at a time
