Job Summary
Note: The eligibility list established for this position will be used to fill one or more (temporary) positions within the Community and Cultural Services Department, Community Programs Division – Annenberg Community Beach House.
About the Role
Coordinates and oversees the daily operations of a City aquatics and recreation program site. Plans, coordinates and monitors program activities and events. Monitors aquatics and recreation program staff. Represents the interests of the community and ensures the success of aquatics and recreation programs.
Responsibilities
- Functions as the primary on-duty site coordinator for a City aquatics and recreation facility and is a key member of the City’s comprehensive aquatics and recreation program.
- Monitors the daily operations of an aquatics and recreation program site. Conducts daily inspections of the program site. Identifies site maintenance needs. Submits work requests. Makes recommendations for changes to program operations as required.
- Maintains program records and prepares reports, as required. Responds to routine or more serious issues, complaints and emergency situations.
- Handles and resolves program participant conflicts. Refers sensitive situations to the Beach Program Development Supervisor or the Principal Community Services Supervisor.
- Assists in the development of the aquatics program training curriculum, including emergency response procedures.
- Provides basic first aid and CPR.
Requirements
- Knowledge: of: Basic principles of community services, recreation and aquatics programming. Aquatics program curriculum development. Staff scheduling, training and supervision techniques. Aquatics facility operation. Techniques for record-keeping and cash handling. First aid methods and safety precautions used in aquatics programs. Basic principles of group management and child development. Applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Effective techniques of leading and coordinating others. Effective customer service and conflict and dispute resolution techniques. Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment.
- Ability: To assess the effectiveness of daily program activities and operation. Think critically and develop effective solutions to operational problems. Develop and implement aquatics program procedures. Monitor and train aquatics program staff. Resolve program participant conflicts and disputes. Maintain accurate program records. Conduct effective community outreach activities and promote community participation in programs. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with patrons, City employees and the general public. Provide effective customer service. Create, develop, plan and coordinate aquatics program activities. Learn, understand and apply applicable policies and procedures. Provide basic first aid and CPR.
- Skill: In dealing with direct program staff in a constructive and supportive manner. Dealing with the public in a courteous manner. Communicating program needs effectively. Working cooperatively with others. Reading, writing and communicating in English at a professional level.
- Education, Training And Experience: Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate of Arts degree or 60 semester units or the equivalent of college level course work in Community Services Recreation, Physical Education or a related field. Two years of recent, paid work experience planning, coordinating and implementing aquatics and recreational programs. At least one year of the required recent, paid work experience must have included leading and monitoring of program staff. Additional, recent, paid and relevant work experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year for year basis.
- Licenses And Certificates: Possession of a valid Red Cross or National/State accredited certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the professional rescuer, Water Safety Instruction and lifeguard training. Possession of a lifeguard training instructor certificate, dependent upon assignment. A valid Class C driver license.
Supplemental Information
This is a temporary hourly position without benefits. The City of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as-needed (temporary) employees who are not eligible for coverage under the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The City and as-needed employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the deferred compensation plan. As-needed employee contributions will be deducted from paychecks on a pre-tax basis.
