About the Role
The Fleet Manager will work closely with our employee drivers and other staff members to deliver the highest level of service to our internal and external customers. This role focuses on routing, scheduling, and streamlining operations to reduce costs while maintaining the service quality our customers expect. The Fleet Manager will collaborate regularly with drivers, dispatchers, maintenance, and sales teams to meet or exceed revenue goals.
Responsibilities
- Administer and manage all transactions associated with drivers in a multi-state trucking fleet and distribution operation
- Develop and maintain fleet schedules, manage daily routing, and route development
- Purchase fuel and manage paper and paperless logs
- Administer safety and job-related training for personnel
- Manage talent acquisition, performance management, and retention for the department
- Dispatch, routing, and truck scheduling: schedule drivers, arrange routes in collaboration with the Sales Department, and allocate vehicles and backhauls as needed
- Develop, implement, and maintain compliance with all laws, regulations, and taxes associated with multi-state trucking operations
- Oversee licensing and review route reports daily to streamline operations
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations
- Monitor and maintain quality service for customer, retail, and food service accounts by appropriately staffing routes
- Maintain manual and electronic documents
- Support route development and sales staff for new routes or review potential route combinations
- Manage drug screening programs for DOT compliance
- Conduct bi-annual driver meetings
- Manage equipment acquisition and maintenance
- Oversee DOD contracts, including routing, passes, and driver background reviews
- Recruit, hire, and conduct drive tests for applicants
- Develop and implement safety policies and procedures, and manage the Safety program for the transportation department
- Enforce safety practices and ensure employees receive appropriate safety training
- Conduct driver ride-alongs for training and evaluation purposes as needed
- Cross-train employees as needed
- Facilitate timely information flow between sales, buyers, and dispatch to support job functions
- Maintain and improve driver files
- Manage the driver safety program and manual (SOP, safety procedures, backing, unloading, distractions, winter driving, lane changes, proper spacing, parking, etc.)
- Assist with mechanical problems and develop procedures for handling these calls
- Supervise additional staff as needed
- Perform other duties as required
Requirements
- Trucking experience, including knowledge of current IFTA guidelines and tax laws
- Working knowledge of current DOT and FMCSA regulations
- High school diploma or GED
- 3+ years of experience in trucking administration
- DOT reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing training preferred
- Class A CDL license and clean driving record
- Current medical card
- Knowledge of ELD software programs preferred
- Knowledge of Qualcomm is a plus
- Previous driving and fleet management experience
- General clerical aptitude and knowledge of record keeping
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, with strong problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills and ability to multi-task
- Excellent organization and time management skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Working Environment
The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, as well as some stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching. The job involves an equal combination of sitting, standing, and walking during the day and is performed in the office, warehouse, and shop. Noise levels range from moderate to high, depending on desk placement and time of year.
