Fitness Specialist

About the Role

The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) department of Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) provides fitness, recreation, lodging, and food and beverage programs for service members, their families, retired military, and civilian employees. This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Responsibilities

  • Provides fitness training and programming to groups of various sizes, including designing, supervising, coaching, and instructing group exercise programs (e.g., Step, Spin, Water Aerobics) in assigned workout areas.
  • Assists with fitness and MWR events such as competitions, challenges, and races.
  • Instructs patrons on the proper use of fitness equipment, safety procedures, and self-monitored progress through written instructions.
  • Provides training tips to prevent unsafe or ineffective exercise techniques.
  • Instructs on conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility.
  • Conducts fitness testing, including measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and blood pressure.
  • Stays current with the latest fitness programming ideas to increase attendance and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Conducts fitness orientation classes, including facility tours, rules and regulations review, and introductions to cardiovascular, free-weight, and resistance machines.
  • Establishes and reviews event schedules, conducts tours, and prepares gymnasiums, facilities, and playing fields for fitness events.
  • Ensures adherence to regulations and safety procedures.
  • Provides certified group exercise services to active-duty military as outlined in the Navy's Physical Readiness Program instruction.
  • Assists with the instruction of the Command Fitness Leader course and fitness-related general military training.
  • Works with command representatives to develop and implement physical fitness programs for military personnel.
  • Assists the Fitness Director and/or Coordinator with outreach and implementation of Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling Series (NOFFS), Mission Nutrition, Command Fitness Leader Courses, and other CNIC-supported programs.
  • Ensures facilities and sporting fields are open and closed at posted times and monitors security of premises.
  • Monitors activity within the facility, assists patrons with equipment use, and maintains order.
  • Ensures athletic playing surfaces are properly maintained, safe, and ready for play.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities, including janitorial services (e.g., sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, and locker areas).
  • Makes minor repairs to facilities and equipment and assists with outdoor maintenance.
  • Reports maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must satisfactorily complete all background checks for childcare positions, including fingerprint checks, a Tier 1 with Child Care check, and a State Criminal History Repository check when there is regular contact with children under 18.
  • Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.
  • Must obtain the following within 60 days: CPR and First Aid, AED, Blood-borne Pathogen training, and Navy Basic Fitness Certification.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to obtain and maintain a Secret Security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Must hold both of the following certifications (all certifications must be included in the application):
    • Fitness instructor, personal trainer, or certification from an NCCA or DEAC health/fitness organization.
    • A primary certification from an accredited health/fitness organization.
  • Professional competence in physical activity programs or related areas.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair.
  • Skill in planning and carrying out enhanced programs in the recreation specialty area to meet community needs.
  • Skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to individuals and groups of various sizes.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to competently and independently carry out fitness programs through the application of recreation principles, concepts, and techniques.
  • Ability to conduct accurate fitness testing and provide recommended fitness programs based on goals.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports related to work within the Branch.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations and/or training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Work requires physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, stretching, and twisting to demonstrate techniques and teach classes in a frequently hot/humid environment.

Education

A high-school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. All proof of education must be uploaded at the time of applying.
