Essential Duties, Functions And Responsibilities
- Counsels and presents fitness sessions to patients in two specific categories: low risk (undiagnosed or free from chronic disease) and moderate-high risk (multiple risk factors or diagnosed with chronic diseases such as diabetes).
- Monitors and evaluates patient progress, prioritizing safety.
- Provides up-to-date exercise education to patients, employees, and community members.
- Retrieves and reviews patient medical, laboratory, and pharmacy histories using the Electronic Health Record before conducting initial fitness assessments.
- Conducts clinical exercise prescriptions, fitness assessments, and patient consultations, collaborating with healthcare providers according to proper exercise guidelines.
- Able to recognize signs and symptoms of exhaustion, behavioral changes, and cognitive abilities during physical activity.
- Plans and facilitates group activities and training for clients, staff, and community members to expand services and increase public awareness of chronic disease control and prevention.
- Promotes health and wellness activities via telephone, social media, and internet, and communicates with medical health providers about patient changes in blood glucose levels, subjective limitations, or concerns related to exercise.
- Consults with professional and paraprofessional staff and other programs at local, tribal, state, and federal levels regarding the effects of exercise on chronic disease.
- Participates in routine records maintenance in compliance with the Privacy Act, HIPAA, and FDIHB policies.
- Completes departmental Quality Monitoring Reports and forms to track patient, program, and employee progress.
- Plans, designs, and implements clinical programs targeting special population groups.
- Utilizes latest fitness research and medical knowledge in providing and evaluating health and fitness services.
- Researches evidence-based programs to implement for patients and community members after obtaining approval from the direct supervisor.
- Plans, designs, and implements fitness programs and events; establishes partnerships and collaborations for resources, data collection, and evaluation methods.
- Provides a final report for all events, programs, and services provided by the FDIHB Wellness Department within a timely manner.
- Ensures effective communication between and among multi-disciplinary teams to complete event projects or campaigns efficiently.
- Works weekends and holidays.
- Consults with other members of FDIHB departments regarding clinical applications and services.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Mandatory Minimum Qualifications
- No experience required.
- Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Completion or requirement to obtain within six months of starting employment:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification or other NCCA accredited Personal Training Certification.
- Email current certificate of Indian blood (CIB), valid insurable driver’s license, high school diploma, and college degree or transcripts to Loren.Begay@fdihb.org.
- NAVAJO/INDIAN PREFERENCE: Applicants must be enrolled members of the Navajo Nation for primary preference, and members of other federally-recognized Indian tribes for secondary preference. Other candidates will be considered only after all preference-entitled candidates have been fully considered.
