FIT NYC Adjunct Faculty Pool - Film Studies

About the role

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position in the Film, Media, Performing Arts Department, within the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Responsibilities

• Teach film studies courses at the introductory and/or advanced level, with an emphasis on critical analysis, interpretation, and historical context.
• Lead engaging, discussion-based classes that encourage close reading of films and active student participation.
• Introduce students to key concepts in film theory, historiography, and visual analysis.
• Design and assess written assignments that develop students' analytical and argumentative skills.
• Provide historical, cultural, and theoretical frameworks for understanding cinema across periods and regions.

Requirements

• Candidates must have an earned Master's degree, as well as thirty (30) additional and appropriate graduate credits and/or evidence of scholarly achievement, professional activities, and teaching experience. The requirement for the Master's Degree may be waived if the candidate is in a doctoral program in which the Master's Degree is not required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of film history, theory, and critical approaches to cinema.
• Ability to teach close analysis of film form, including cinematography, editing, sound, and narrative structure.

Pay

$89.98 per hour based on minimum qualifications. The final rate, step and appointment rank are determined by a candidate's ability to demonstrate that they meet the respective school's additional criteria for hiring "above the first step," in accordance with the CBA Adjunct Salary Schedules (pp 88-89) .

Schedule

This is a part-time position, adjunct teaching position beginning in Spring 2026. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled. The department will keep this posting open to create a pool of candidates for potential future adjunct assignments. The department will contact applicants whose qualifications fit our programmatic needs.
