FIT Driver (Family in Transition) - Transportation

Key Responsibilities

  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Drive school van safely to transport students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions in a timely manner
  • Assist students and other passengers to provide for safe loading and unloading from the van during normal and emergency transport
  • Assess potential emergency situations and take appropriate action to protect the safety and well-being of passengers
  • Instruct students in the rules and regulations of safe riding and evacuation procedures
  • Manage and handle conduct of students and passengers while they are in the van
  • Prepare documentation for disciplinary problems to be administered by school administrators
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of each van driven each day to include trash clean-up, window and vehicle washing
  • Report any discrepancies to vehicle maintenance following proper procedures
  • Do not drive an unsafe vehicle; maintain cleanliness and sanitation of van
  • Complete required paperwork and keep route details current
  • Attend all training programs to meet requirements and maintain transportation certifications
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools

Required Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license
  • Clean driving record from Arizona DOT MVD
  • Pay for a medical certificate form with a minimum of one year expiration date
  • Knowledge of Arizona Minimum Standards for School Buses and School Bus Drivers
  • Knowledge of Arizona traffic laws
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Ability to obtain an IVP fingerprint clearance card
  • Knowledge of procedures and policies related to homeless student transportation, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 2002, and transportation requirements for special education students

  • Knowledge of Arizona traffic laws
  • Proficient demonstration of driving skills; ability to drive under pressure
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) with students, parents, coworkers and district personnel at all levels
  • Read and understand routes, maps and schedules; knowledge of street and school locations within the district helpful
  • Meet time schedules, punctuality and reliability a must
  • Work both AM & PM shifts every weekday, with varying driving assignments (ie. early morning, late afternoon and evening)
  • Transport students safely across varying distances, including freeway driving, cross-city travel, and routes both within and beyond district boundaries

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • This position requires a range of physical abilities to perform the essential duties.
  • Physical Demands: Frequently - Ability to pull, reach, push, bend, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and sit; Occasionally - Using repetitive hand motions or manual dexterity; Strong reflexes for steering, braking, and maneuvering the vehicle safely; Speaking, hearing, and seeing (with or without correction); Maintaining focus for extended periods
  • Lifting & Force: Occasionally - up to 50 pounds of force; Frequently - up to 30 pounds of force; Constantly - up to 30 pounds of force
  • Working Environment: Some conditions may include: Drivers work both inside the vehicle and outdoors when inspecting or fueling the vehicle; Travel, odors, dust, and outside elements; Limited workspace, loud noises, and bloodborne pathogens
