About the role
Lead technician for the sockeye program, performing a variety of technical and skilled tasks related to fisheries management.
Responsibilities
- Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids
- Operation of snow mobiles, quads, boats of various sizes, and heavy-duty trucks (requires CDL)
- Equipment maintenance and purchasing of operating supplies and inventory
- Monitoring of early life history study sites: download of temperature data, enumeration of developing fish, deployment and retrieval of technical monitoring gear
- Spawning ground surveys for genetic sampling, carcass recovery, and carcass evaluation (length, condition)
- Operation of the off-ladder adult fish facility at Priest Rapids Dam
- Safe collection and transport of both juvenile and adult salmonids
- Collection of various types of field data related to monitoring and evaluation in fisheries management
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience as a Fisheries Technician II
- Pass a pre-employment drug test and background check
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License with ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with Defensive Driving Course certificate (updated every 2 years)

- Knowledge of standard fisheries principles and procedures
- Skills in the operation of equipment and tools used in fisheries work
- Public outreach and tactful interaction to promote program awareness
- Basic maintenance of facilities and equipment
- Leadership and effective communication (verbal and written) for cooperation within YN and between co-management agencies
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and perform physical labor for extended periods
Preferred Requirements
- One year of higher education at a college, university, or post-high school technical school
- Enrolled Yakama Preference (all qualified applicants encouraged to apply)
