Position Summary

Support the practice of safe “hot work” procedures, including ensuring worker safety, preventing fire from happening, putting out small fires, and cleaning area. These tasks will be accomplished, in addition to meeting local, state, and federal requirements.

Essential Functions And Major Responsibilities

  • Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or a multi-craft work crew.
  • Performs work with minimal supervision.
  • Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.
  • Performs fire watch duties supporting shipyard projects.
  • Performs general cleanup of the area before hot work begins.
  • Works in a team environment under the supervision of a foreman.
  • Properly cares for and safely uses tools and all company property.
  • Obtains and maintains a fully pressurized fire extinguisher.
  • Ensures the 1 ½” fire hose is readily available and pressurized when needed.
  • Ensures that hot work permit and potential marine chemist certificate are executed and posted before hot work begins.
  • Checks general precautions on hot work permit prior to hot work beginning.
  • Maintains awareness of fire alarm systems and procedures.
  • Maintains safety procedures throughout area when performing roving or zone fire watch duties.
  • Utilizes and applies fire-retardant cloth in hot work areas, as necessary.
  • Responsible for proper utilization of fire extinguishers: CO2 and water pressure extinguishers.
  • Responsible for replacing used extinguishers as soon as they have been discharged.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Ability to use tank signals to start work and air horn or whistle to convey warnings.
  • Ability to pass fire watch certification which includes a four-hour slide show and hands on demonstration of firefighting techniques.
  • Recognizes and resolves unsafe working conditions and corrects by removing flammable materials or wetting down dry planks.
  • Ability to set up and monitor the operation of fire watch services.
  • Familiarity with the general layout of a vessel and its tanks, spaces, and other compartments.

Education And/Or Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 3 years relevant work experience.
  • Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • A four-hour fire watch certification must be obtained prior to, on first day of work.

  • Talking, Hearing, Vision, Near Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 inches or less), Far Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 feet of more), Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision to judge distance/spatial relationships), Field of Vision, and Smell.
  • Interpersonal Contacts: Interaction/communication with others, frequently; works alone/independently, frequently; directs/supervises others, infrequently.
  • Attention to detail: constantly must perform tasks in a safe manner both for personal safety and safety of those around.
  • Flexibility: frequently needs to be flexible depending on needs of other crafts people.

Work Environment

  • Works indoors: frequently may be exposed to petroleum and petroleum by-products as well as grease, paint, fumes, dust, vibration, asbestos, free-silica, welding flash and noise.
  • Works outdoors: frequently may be exposed to all of the above and all kinds of typical outdoor weather.
  • Safety equipment required: fire watch vest, hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs (if needed), appropriate shoes, respirator (when required), working flashlight, gloves, fire extinguishers and fire hose.
  • Other Exposures: frequently may be exposed to petroleum and petroleum by-products including grease, paint, fumes, dust, vibration, asbestos, free-silica, welding flash and noise.
  • Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: fire extinguishers, fire hose, and fire-retardant cloth.
