Firefighter Paid On-Call/Part-time

About the Role

Under general supervision of the Public Safety Shift Sergeant, this position protects life and property through fire suppression, prevention activities, and emergency medical response. The role also involves conducting fire inspections and maintaining equipment in a state of readiness.

Responsibilities

• Extinguish uncontrolled fires in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities.
• Operate large emergency vehicles during both daytime and nighttime hours, including in emergency situations with speeds exceeding posted limits, adverse traffic, and unsafe road or environmental conditions.
• Perform tasks requiring lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects during fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, extrication, and related activities.
• Climb over obstacles, use ladders to access elevated surfaces, and crawl in confined spaces for investigations or rescues.
• Communicate effectively over fire service radio channels under adverse conditions.
• Enter and exit fire apparatus quickly in response to emergencies and perform rescue and fire suppression activities.
• Render emergency medical assistance to sick and injured persons (if licensed as a Michigan Medical First Responder or higher).
• Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and fire codes for appropriate response.
• Conduct inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential properties to identify and abate fire hazards.
• Conduct public fire education activities, such as informational talks, open houses, and school tours.
• Participate in training functions and public relations activities (e.g., Crusade for Toys, Fire Prevention Week Open House).
• Maintain fire equipment and personal protective equipment in a state of readiness.
• Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar and computations.

Supplemental Responsibilities

• Participate in housekeeping duties to maintain the Public Safety station.
• Assist in maintenance of fire-related record keeping and data entry.
• Wash and wax various apparatus and vehicles as necessary.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as Firefighter I, in accordance with Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council standards.
• Certification as a Michigan Medical First Responder (MFR) or higher.
• Valid Michigan operator's license.

• Ability to safely lift heavy equipment, alone or with assistance.
• Ability to work in close environments and at heights up to and including 100 feet or more.
• Mechanical abilities to operate fire apparatus and related equipment for fire suppression, search and rescue, extrication, and overhaul.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing with superior officers and the general public, including presentations and written reports.
• Ability to safely operate large fire apparatus and pass the fire apparatus driving course recognized by the Michigan Firefighter's Training Council.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Exposure to extreme temperatures, heavy smoke conditions, and chemical, physical, and mechanical hazards (approximately 5% of work time).
• Adherence to safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions to minimize hazards.
• Response to medical emergencies involving sick and injured persons, with potential exposure to bodily fluids, disease agents, and bloodborne pathogens.
• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including visual and/or auditory assistive devices.
