About the role

This position performs emergency medical care, transportation, and protective service work related to fire response and emergency medical services. Engages in hazard mitigation and property conservation in response to incidents such as medical emergencies, fires, and hazardous materials incidents. The hiring level will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and certifications.

Pay

  • Firefighter/EMT: $38,054 to $53,870
  • Firefighter/Advanced EMT: $41,428 to $58,753
  • Firefighter/EMT Intermediate: $43,545 to $62,787
  • Firefighter/Paramedic: $47,893 to $69,071

Responsibilities

  • Act as a Virginia-certified Emergency Medical Technician, providing basic life support and EMS stabilization procedures to the level of certification.
  • Perform patient extraction from potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Respond to fire suppression, vehicle and technical rescue, and hazardous material incidents.
  • Prepare accurate records and reports for State of Virginia Fire and EMS reporting.
  • Drive and operate emergency equipment and vehicles as certified.
  • Assist in maintenance of Fire and Rescue equipment, buildings, grounds, and vehicles.
  • Replenish supplies and materials as needed.
  • Assist in providing EMS and general fire safety training to the public.
  • Support Community Risk Reduction programs and strategies.
  • Prepare and update pre-fire plan information.
  • Perform other duties related to EMS, Fire, and Emergency Services as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized EMS, Fire, and Rescue training.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid Virginia or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced EMT, EMT-Intermediate, or Paramedic certification.
  • Completion of an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC).
  • EMT-Intermediate or Paramedic candidates must possess Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • Ability to meet the Department’s physical standards.
  • Must obtain Firefighter I, Basic Pump Operator, NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800, and Mass Casualty I and II certifications within 18 months of employment.

Skills

  • Working knowledge of modern fire suppression and prevention.
  • Working knowledge of emergency medical services and resuscitation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Skill in operating firefighting and EMS tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with team members, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, as well as in teams.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must meet Department’s physical standards.

Tools and Equipment Used

  • Fire trucks, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment.
  • Ladders, first aid equipment, radios, pagers, personal computers, cell phones.
  • Computer-aided systems, fax machines, and copy machines.
