About the role
Engages in fire suppression and fire prevention activities as a member of a fire company, to protect and safeguard lives and property. Performs rescue and First Responder medical assistance on a regular basis. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Performs first aid, CPR, automatic defibrillation, and medical assistance tasks as required.
- Lays hose lines, operates nozzles and master-stream devices, raises and climbs ladders, ventilation work, and salvage and overhaul operations.
- Extricates and rescues trapped victims from hazardous or life-threatening situations.
- Conducts numerous types of training activities covering all phases of Department operations.
- Drives fire apparatus, operates pump and aerial devices under both emergency and non-emergency conditions.
- Performs fire prevention activities by inspecting schools, churches, hospitals, and other public and private facilities for fire hazards and code violations.
- Responds to hazardous material calls and performs first responder duties.
- Cleans and performs routine maintenance on fire stations and grounds, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
- Assists other City Departments and citizens as necessary.
- Participates in public fire safety education and public relations programs.
- Performs duties of a Driver/Engineer or Captain in their absence.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- CPAT Certification prior to hire date.
- Missouri Emergency Medical Technician Certificate and EMT license by the hire date.
- Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations certifications.
- Knowledge of fire behavior, hydraulic principles, fire suppression tactics, and department rules, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of City geography, principles of building construction, and basic first aid and life support.
- Knowledge of reporting and record keeping systems.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials.
- Ability to operate heavy duty fire apparatus under emergency conditions.
- Ability to react quickly and effectively, and to cope with stressful situations and function effectively in fire ground activities.
- Interpersonal communications skills.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Meets “Qualifying Standards” as specified in Article 22 of Working Agreement with Local 77.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's degree in Fire Science preferred.
Skills
- Perform mechanical and physical tasks.
- Assume leadership duties during periods assigned Fire Captain duties and fire apparatus operation during periods assigned.
- Operate various fire trucks and other motor vehicles.
