About the role
The Fire Alarm System Designer at Sciens Building Solutions is responsible for the design and engineering of fire alarm systems in compliance with NFPA codes and project specifications. This role involves applying engineering principles to meet code and customer requirements, reviewing product specifications, and interfacing with AutoCAD drafters, project managers, and sales team.
Responsibilities
- Design systems in accordance with NFPA and project specifications.
- Participate in the review process with other design team members and drafters, as requested by management.
- Using software such as AutoCAD, develop floor plans, riser diagrams, schematics, system power calculations, and control panel layouts.
- Review all designs before submitting for approval to ensure they meet Sciens quality standards and code requirements.
- Follow all Sciens policies and procedures during daily work activities.
- Work independently or with others as a team to complete all tasks and related design functions.
- Routinely work with sales and project managers to ensure the most efficient design while maintaining the highest quality standards.
- Assist and provide feedback to the sales and project managers for organizing, planning, and prioritizing work.
- Assist management in developing and implementing a quality service program to increase efficiency and proficiencies for the design and engineering department.
- Assist management by advising drafters to ensure that their goals and objectives are met.
- Ensure design complies with applicable codes and AHJ requirements.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in sprinkler design.
- Proficient in design software (HydroCAD or AutoSprink).
- Understanding of fire sprinkler system types (Wet, Dry, Preaction, Deluge, Fire pump systems).
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NFPA 13, 14, 20, 24, 25).
- Ability to interpret project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Develops accurate and code-compliant sprinkler system layouts and designs.
- Performs hydraulic calculations and understands system demand requirements.
- Prepares submittal packages including drawings, calculations, and material data.
- Participates in BIM coordination meetings and resolves clashes with other trades.
- Works closely with project managers and field teams to ensure designs are practical and installable.
- Identifies design issues, discrepancies, and potential change orders early in the process.
- Create fabrication lists and review for accuracy and efficiency.
Qualifications
- NICET II or III preferred but not required.
