Fire Safety Specialist/Engineer I

Summary of Duties

The Fire Safety Specialist/Engineer I serves as a Damage Control subject matter expert in support of the CNSP Fire Safety Assessment Program (FSAP). Responsibilities include conducting shipboard assessments, policy reviews, and training for Fire Marshals and In-port Emergency Teams. Must have at least five years of experience working on board ship in Damage Control.

Specific Description Of Duties

• Plans, executes, and monitors short and long-term strategy and process improvement efforts to enhance firefighting capabilities of ships in an industrial environment.
• Plans all aspects of a Damage Control Fire Safety inspection aboard all surface combatant platforms, including developing the Schedule of Events (SOE).
• Provides technical guidance to Force Damage Control Officer, Program Managers, and surface ships regarding compliance with CNSP instructions and policy for Shipboard Damage Control and Firefighting Systems.
• Maintains liaison with counterparts at NAVSEA, RMCs, support contractors, Fleet Commanders, and other CNSP TYCOM Directorates and subordinate commands, addressing matters related to planned major industrial availabilities.
• Monitors the readiness and material condition of ships' firefighting equipment and associated supporting equipment during industrial availabilities, identifying material problem trends and potential class-wide problem areas.
• Serves as the Damage Control Subject Matter Expert on a combined civilian-military team, balancing the strengths and weaknesses of each member to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.

Supervisory Controls

This position works under the general and technical direction of the Force Damage Control Officer, who provides broad policy guidance and overall objectives through discussions or written objectives. The incumbent is delegated wide latitude for independently initiating action based on experience, mature judgment, and professional competence. The incumbent recognizes and identifies problem areas and formulates methods and procedures for the successful accomplishment of assignments. Work is reviewed for achievement of objectives, soundness of conclusions, and recommendations.

Certificates, Qualifications, Education Requirements

• High School Education or GED
• Minimum of five (5) Years of Experience working onboard ship in Damage Control
• Thorough knowledge of Damage Control installed and portable systems, performance, operation, and technical specifications per NSTM and applicable technical publications
• Working knowledge of major equipment/systems aboard naval ships, including operational and/or repair experience
• Analysis of interrelated issues of effectiveness, efficiency, and safety to produce assessment of the damage control environment and recommended actions necessary to correct deficiencies

Additional Skills And Other Notes

• Frequent temporary duty travel, approximately 50% of the time, may require visiting overseas locations
• Requires a valid U.S. Government No-Fee Passport application upon employment
• Work is performed in an office setting and aboard ship, requiring frequent visits to industrial sites and exposure to heavy industrial environments
• May be assigned to work areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present
