Duties
- Training for fire alarms and assistance in fire suppression
- Assisting in the clean-up and overhaul work after a fire
- Maintaining and repairing fire and emergency medical equipment
- Operating emergency vehicles safely
- Performing emergency medical services
- Participating in continuing training and instruction
- Participating in the department's wellness program
Essential Duties
- Driving fire truck, ambulance, or other emergency vehicle to emergency scenes
- Assisting with maintenance and clean-up of fire and emergency medical equipment
- Assisting with station, equipment, and grounds maintenance
- Performing emergency medical services according to level of skills and certification
- Updating various logs and lists using a computer
- Observing safety rules and procedures
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of city and county geography
- Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics
- Technical firefighting principles and techniques
- Principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression
- Federal, state, and local rules and procedures affecting Fire/EMS operations
- Operate emergency vehicles safely
Physical Ability
- Swim
- Lift and maneuver up to 165 lbs.
- Climb ladders
- Perform CPR
- Wear and utilize personal protective equipment
- Perform strenuous work in adverse conditions
Mental Ability
- Tolerate working at heights and confined places for prolonged periods of time
- Operate all vehicles and equipment in the department
- Read maps
- Keep accurate records
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public
- Deal effectively with individuals under stress
- Maintain appropriate necessary certifications
- Must have a Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities and a good driving record
Acceptable Experience And Training
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Some college work in fire sciences is desirable
Certificates And Licenses Required
- EMT Paramedic certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services
- An appropriate Texas driver's license
- A basic firefighter certification within 6 months of employment
