Fire Protection Engineering Technologist 3/4

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Engineering Services Division Fire Protection Engineering Group (ES-FPE) is the central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. This position will be filled at either Engineering Technologist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Responsibilities

Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)

• Provide fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations.
• Prepare and maintain fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex laboratory, radiological, and nuclear facilities.
• Support construction projects, including plan review and approval.
• Oversee lab-wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance.
• Lead wildland fire risk reduction initiatives.
• Perform facility fire protection and life safety system assessments.
• Oversee fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance.
• Prepare equivalencies and exemptions, and develop them for DOE Directives, building, and NFPA codes.
• Conduct technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.

Engineering Technologist 4 ($117,200 - $195,400)

In addition to the duties outlined above:

• Sustain and monitor fire protection engineering and loss prevention programs.
• Implement facility and program fire protection assessment/surveillance programs.
• Provide mentoring and technical leadership of staff.
• Interface with nuclear facility safety basis professionals.
• Maintain Laboratory fire protection engineering and maintenance standards.
• Work with all levels of Laboratory management and represent the Division and Laboratory to internal customers, external agencies, and community organizations.
• Review, recommend actions, and provide leadership on fire protection and loss prevention related issues for the Laboratory.

Requirements

• Demonstrated ability to perform detailed technical reviews of fire protection design documents, including plans, submittals, project specs, and similar documents, and provide input to ensure design construction meets applicable requirements.
• Advanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnel.
• Expert experience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of buildings and fire protection systems; or documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processes.
• Proven leadership in supporting and mentoring more junior engineering staff.

Additional Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4

• Demonstrated leadership aptitude, including a clear focus on professional customer service and regulatory compliance.
• Experience in evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative problem-solving and appropriate compromise.
• Experience in developing processes, programs, or project documentation to incorporate and/or implement fire protection or life safety objectives and criteria.

Qualifications

Lower Level: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Higher Level: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or related field from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

• Active Q Clearance.
• Certification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC).
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
• Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly-protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets or AXA XL property risk guidelines.
• Experience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high-hazard, and nuclear facilities.
• Reactor or nonreactor nuclear facility experience.
• Knowledge of DOE-O-420.1C, DOE-STD-1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principles.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Schedule

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position (1 year for this role) to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
