Fire Protection Engineer
About the role
The Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Protection Engineer to join their Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality department. The position is based at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) facility with a 4x10 work schedule, offering Fridays off. Reporting to the MFC Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H) Manager, the Fire Protection Engineer will develop Fire Hazard Analyses, participate in design reviews, review work control documents, and provide fire protection support and expertise.
Responsibilities
- Perform Fire Hazard Analysis and Facility Assessments for operations, processes, facilities, and structures.
- Analyze fire dynamics, fire protection systems, and life safety codes.
- Interact with state, city, and DOE officials regarding fire protection matters.
- Identify, analyze, and mitigate fire protection related hazards.
- Review work control documents to ensure appropriate incorporation of fire protection theories and principles.
- Determine and develop innovative solutions to deficiencies.
- Provide input and direction to laboratory-level fire protection related performance measures, reports, and assessments.
- Achieve and maintain professional qualifications, including the INL Fire Protection Qualification.
- Stay updated with new developments in fire protection.
- Maintain relationships of trust with co-workers and customers.
- Ensure compliance with fire protection criteria in design criteria documents, designs, and acceptance testing.
- Coordinate impairment closure issues with the INL Fire Marshal.
- Conduct fire protection engineering surveys and prepare corrective actions or suggested improvement reports.
- Participate in the development of various budgets related to fire protection equipment and projects.
Requirements
- Level 2: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology or related engineering technology or related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program and 2 years fire protection experience, or a Master’s Degree in fire protection or related engineering field and 2 years experience.
- Level 3: Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering Technology or related engineering technology or related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program and 5 years experience or Master’s Degree in fire protection or related engineering field and 2 years experience.
Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, requiring US Citizenship.
- PE License in Fire Protection preferred.
Benefits and Relocation
The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($ 79,344 - $162,732 ) / Level 3 ($95,256- $195,288 ). Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in office, industrial, construction, and laboratory environments. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
