Fire Protection Engineer

Hut 8 · Miami, FL · 3 days ago
ManagementFull-time

About the role

The Fire Protection Engineer is a shared resource covering suppression, detection, and life-safety design review across Hut 8's data center projects, coordinating AHJ and insurer (FM Global) requirements. Fire protection in a data center sits at the intersection of three demanding stakeholders—code, the insurer, and operations—and this role keeps all three satisfied without compromising uptime philosophy.

  • Suppression & Detection Design Review: Review suppression designs (pre-action, clean agent, water mist, chemical/ESS-specific systems) and detection designs (VESDA/aspirating, spot detection, linear heat) across projects for code compliance, FM Global data sheet conformance, and program standards. Verify zoning and coverage against the actual room-by-room hazard picture, including battery/energy-storage areas.
  • AHJ Coordination: Own fire protection permitting interfaces: plan submittals, variance requests, and inspection support through acceptance testing. Build working relationships with fire marshals across jurisdictions and resolve interpretation issues before they hit the schedule.
  • Insurer (FM Global) Coordination: Drive FM Global engagement across the portfolio: plan reviews, data sheet compliance, jockey/fire pump and water supply requirements, and field engineering visits. Negotiate practical resolutions where FM requirements and design intent conflict.
  • Cross-Discipline Integration: Coordinate FP scope with mechanical, electrical, and controls: fan shutdown and damper sequences, EPO philosophy, suppression interlocks, and alarm integration into the BMS/monitoring stack. Ensure the FP system's behavior during an event is designed, not discovered.
  • Acceptance & Commissioning Support: Support acceptance testing of suppression and detection systems, integrated testing of interlocks and sequences, and closure of FP punch items through turnover.
  • Program Standards: Maintain FP standards, specifications, and typical details across the portfolio, and track evolving code and FM requirements for AI-era densities and liquid cooling.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of fire protection engineering for data centers, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • PE in Fire Protection Engineering strongly preferred (or FPE degree with PE path).
  • Deep working knowledge of NFPA 13, 72, 75/76, 2001, and 855, and of FM Global data sheets as applied to data centers.
  • Direct experience managing AHJ plan review and acceptance testing to approval.
  • Insurer coordination experience—FM Global strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of detection/suppression integration with BMS, electrical shutdown, and mechanical sequences.
  • Familiarity with the FP implications of liquid cooling and battery energy storage.
  • Able to cover multiple concurrent projects across jurisdictions.
  • Periodic travel for acceptance tests and FM visits (typically 15-25%).

Work Environment

This role will be based in our Miami headquarters, with travel to project sites as needed.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance.
  • Paid time off.
