We are seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to join our team in a schedule-driven, collaborative environment. You will work closely with clients and report to the Team Lead, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to develop fire protection and life safety design packages for industrial projects. While fire protection is the primary responsibility, you may also support mechanical engineering scopes as project needs allow.

About the Role

Apply your expertise in fire protection systems, fire and building codes, industrial facility requirements, and mechanical engineering fundamentals to deliver practical, code-compliant design solutions. This role requires independent work on defined fire protection scopes while coordinating with multi-discipline project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to health, safety, and environmental requirements while supporting safe project execution.
  • Develop fire protection and life safety design deliverables for industrial facilities, including studies, calculations, specifications, drawings, and construction packages.
  • Evaluate fire hazards and develop practical fire protection design solutions that meet applicable codes, standards, client requirements, and project objectives.
  • Design and review fire suppression systems, perform hydraulic calculations, and evaluate water supply requirements for fire protection systems.
  • Develop and review fire alarm, detection, notification, and related life safety system requirements in coordination with I&E and other disciplines.
  • Perform code reviews and support compliance with applicable NFPA standards, IBC, IFC, local AHJ requirements, and client standards.
  • Prepare technical specifications, support procurement packages, perform bid evaluations, and review vendor documentation for conformance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate fire protection requirements with process, mechanical, piping, civil, structural, architectural, and I&E disciplines.
  • Support mechanical engineering tasks on a limited basis when cross-training opportunities align with project needs, while maintaining fire protection as the primary area of responsibility.
  • Participate in site walks, design reviews, constructability reviews, and construction support activities, including RFIs, field changes, commissioning, testing, and acceptance support.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in Fire Protection Engineering, preferably supporting industrial, manufacturing, refinery, chemical, or other process facility projects.
  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Fire Protection PE license required; CFPS, NICET, or other relevant fire protection certification preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable fire protection and life safety codes and standards, including NFPA 13, NFPA 20, NFPA 24, NFPA 30, NFPA 72, NFPA 101, IBC, IFC, and applicable local requirements.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing fire protection design deliverables, including drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment data sheets, and construction packages.
  • Experience performing hydraulic calculations and evaluating water supply, fire pumps, hydrants, monitors, sprinkler systems, standpipes, and special hazard systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial facility fire hazards, hazardous area considerations, and coordination with process safety requirements.

Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical communication through email, reports, specifications, and design review comments.
  • Ability to deal with change and demonstrate flexibility as required.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to coordinate technical requirements across multiple disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Willingness to use approved AI tools and work effectively with HVE resources to improve efficiency, quality, and collaboration.
  • Ability to form and foster collaborative relationships within Eichleay and with clients, partners, vendors, contractors, and AHJs.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience coordinating with AHJs, insurance representatives, vendors, contractors, and client site safety teams.
  • Experience leading or checking fire protection design work performed by engineers, designers, or contractors.

Industry Requirements

  • This role may require some or all of the following at time of hire or during employment:
    • RSO Safety Training and current card or ability to obtain.
    • Client Safety Training and current badge or ability to obtain.
    • TWIC Certification and current card or ability to obtain.
    • Background screening including previous employment, education, criminal history, and driving record verification.
    • Participation in random drug and alcohol program.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The role may involve occasional standing, walking, sitting, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, talking, and hearing. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Overtime may be necessary, including weekdays, weekends, and/or holidays. Work may be performed at client offices, sites, production facilities, or industrial/construction job sites, with conditions varying by location.

Pay

$115,000 - $150,000 anticipated annual salary, varying based on skills, experience, qualifications, and internal peer equity.
