About the role
The Fire Protection Design Manager will provide general supervision of all design/BIM aspects of new construction sprinkler projects.
Responsibilities
- Manage and delegate project management duties for each project
- Review design drawings for compliance with NFPA codes and project specifications
- Review material submittals for compliance with NFPA codes and project specifications
- Review hydraulic calculations for compliance with NFPA codes and project specifications
- Review and procure all material stock lists for construction projects
- Coordinate material delivery with customer and field superintendent
- Supervise designers’ tasks and schedules
- Review designer drawings to comply with department standards
- Monitor design hours for profitability and efficiency
- Supervise field measuring process with designers
- Participate in regularly scheduled department meetings to review progress on current and future projects
- Assist fire protection sales team with bid take-offs as needed
- Coordinate and resolve design conflicts with field superintendent
- Conduct job “kick-off” meetings for superintendent and field crews
- Coordinate regular fire protection department meetings
- Review and approve vendor material invoices for construction
- Coordinate permit process with local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
- Coordinate and review shop drawing process with architect/engineer
- Maintain “design” file for each construction project
- Coordinate with fire protection service staff for small/day work projects
- Ensure proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- 5–7 years of experience in fire protection design and/or equivalent combination of vocational training and experience
- Prior supervisory/management experience
- NICET Level II certification (preferred but not required)
- Understanding of NFPA and local authorities’ jurisdiction requirements
- Ability to interpret architect drawings and specifications
- Proficient in Windows-based CAD, AutoCAD design software, or other fire protection design software
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and spatial orientation skills
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, MS Word, and Excel
- Excellent organizational and communication skills with attention to detail
- Strong negotiation and problem-resolution skills
- Ability to multi-task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, and demonstrate problem-solving skills
- Must be available to work assigned schedule
- Must be willing to relocate to Richmond, VA if offered the position
Work Environment
- Professional office environment with standard office equipment
- Occasional visits to construction sites
- Routine use of construction equipment such as heavy machinery, hand, and power tools
- Travel may be required (typically not overnight)
