The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. PDD is looking to fill a vacancy for Fire Prevention Specialist II for the Plan Review section.
Responsibilities
- Performing advanced technical fire prevention, complex plan review, and inspection work that is of a diversified and complex nature.
- Making decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
- Providing analysis and approval of plans, specifications, and construction documents for buildings, processes, operations, and fire protection systems and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Ordering compliance when violations are discovered.
- Reviewing and analyzing various underground Fire Lines, Sprinkler Installation, Fire Access, Kitchen Hoods, Spray Booths and Fire Alarm drawings for compliance with International Code Council (ICC) Fire and Building Code Compliance.
- Providing technical advice of moderate complexity to City staff, private developers, and the public.
Requirements
Fire Prevention Specialist II:
- Two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist I and ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification OR three years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity along with ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification.
- At time of hire, must possess ICC Fire Inspector II (67) certification.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
Fire Prevention Specialist I (underfill opportunity):
- Completion of the Fire Prevention Specialist Trainee program and an ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification OR two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity, as well as ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification.
- At time of hire, must possess ICC Fire Inspector I (66) certification.

Ideal Candidate
- Knowledge of the City of Phoenix Fire Code, Building Code, ICC Fire code, ordinances, laws, regulations, and standards.
- Knowledge of mathematical principles required to perform Fire related technical calculations.

- Ability to understand and interpret Graphix instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, Word, Excel & PowerPoint and Teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plan reviews.

Pay
- Fire Prevention Specialist II: Pay Range: $30.92 to $47.95 per hour. Hiring Range: $30.92 to $37.58 per hour.
- Fire Prevention Specialist I: Pay Range: $26.70 to $41.42 per hour. Hiring Range: $26.70 to $32.46 per hour.
