About the Role
A Fire Plans Reviewer ensures compliance with Fire and Building codes by reviewing plans for residences, multiple dwellings, new construction, rehabilitation projects, commercial and industrial establishments, and other structures. This role involves enforcing applicable Federal, State, and City laws without supervisory duties. Work is primarily performed in an office with occasional site visits to construction locations, which may involve exposure to heat, smoke, and inclement weather. Minimal physical exertion is required.
Pay
$83,530.00 - $133,471.00 annually.

Requirements
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must meet the following:
- Education: High school diploma or GED certificate from an accredited institution. Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- Experience: Three years of experience in one or more of the following:
- Reviewing Architectural Plans and Fire Protection Shop Drawings
- Conducting inspections for compliance with Fire/Life Safety Codes and building codes
- Performing moderately complex inspections related to construction projects
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent, and eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit (provisional licenses are not acceptable). A copy of the license must be uploaded with the application.
- One of the following certifications (must be maintained for continued employment):
- International Codes Council (ICC) Certified Fire Plans Examiner
- International Codes Council (ICC) Certified Buildings Plans Examiner
- National Fire Protection (NFP) Certified Fire Plans Examiner
- Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI) Plans Examiner II
- Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI) Fire Inspector III
- Equivalent accreditation
Responsibilities
- Review plans to ensure compliance with Fire and Building codes for various structures and projects.
- Inspect residences, multiple dwellings, new construction, rehabilitation projects, and commercial/industrial establishments to enforce applicable laws.
- Apply knowledge of:
- Baltimore City Fire Prevention Code and applicable Federal/State laws
- Methods, materials, and techniques in fire protection systems, building construction, repair, and alterations
- Defects and flaws in fire protection systems and building constructions, including effective correction measures
- Fire and life safety codes, workmanship, and material standards
- Engineering principles as applied to the construction field
- Procedures for tracking permit applications, permits, and their status
- Read and interpret blueprints, working diagrams, and specifications accurately, comparing them with constructions in progress.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, craftspeople, and the public.
- Prepare concise explanations of ordinances, regulations, and rulings.
- Gather information and prepare clear, accurate reports analyzing data to identify and correct faulty or hazardous plans or conditions.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Prepare and present reports.
- Explain the agency’s purpose, programs, and operations.
- Collect, compile, edit, classify, and tabulate statistical and analytical data.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
Additional Information
- Candidates under final consideration for appointment will be required to authorize the release of criminal conviction information.
- Selected candidates, including current City employees, must complete a mandatory six-month probation period.
- Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise for at least six months.
