Fire & Life Safety Technician III

Location: Belknap Campus | Full time | Regular position

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate's degree/Vocational Technical Training in Fire Science and/or Electronics
  • Two (2) years of experience in maintenance of Fire and/or Life Safety Equipment
  • Certified by the State of Kentucky to inspect and maintain Sprinkler Systems and/or Fire Alarm Systems
  • Factory certification on Grinell DCP-200 and/or Grinell Mini-plex 1000 systems (may substitute for Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Systems Certification)
  • Valid driver's license and must be insurable through the University
  • Must pass pre-employment physical
  • Additional experience may offset educational requirements on a one-to-one basis

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and inspect smoke and fire suppression systems and life safety systems
  • Inspect, test, and repair fire alarm wiring, panels, devices, and systems
  • Identify hazard defects and the need for adjustment or repair; follow up on corrective actions
  • Understand and apply National, State, and Local Fire Safety Codes and laws pertaining to University buildings
  • Troubleshoot alarms and respond to calls regarding life safety devices
  • Perform general building maintenance and preventative maintenance as assigned
  • Maintain all UPS Systems, security panels, and card readers for University facilities
  • Respond to emergencies as critical personnel; participate in standby and on-call rotations
  • Perform inspections, testing, and emergency response for facility life safety and security systems
  • Assist with installation or upgrades of fire alarms in campus buildings
  • Ensure alarms are installed according to codes and standards and are functioning properly
  • Apply knowledge of current building, fire, and life safety codes related to fire alarms
  • Perform plan review of new and existing fire and life systems per NFPA 1031
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain fire alarm systems and related components
  • Conduct periodic maintenance on fire alarm systems in accordance with PM Program, NFPA, and manufacturer guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with IBC, IFC, NFPA codes, UFC Code, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
  • Document deficiencies/impairments noted during inspections or service work and follow reporting processes
  • Respond to campus fire and life safety emergencies, including fire/sprinkler activations, security alarms, elevator alarms, process alarms, power outages, and general emergencies
  • Perform life safety detail during sporting and special dignitary events
  • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, backflow preventers, fire hydrants, underground systems, and fire pumps
  • Perform inspections and testing of fire sprinkler, fire pump, and other water-based equipment
  • Adhere to local, corporate, and OSHA safety policies and procedures

    • NFPA 20 (Fire Pumps)
    • NFPA 25 (Inspecting/Testing Fire Sprinkler Systems)
    • NFPA 70 & 70e (Electrical Codes)
    • NFPA 72 (Fire Alarm & Signaling Code)
    • NFPA 90/90a (HVAC & Duct Smoke Code)
    • NFPA 92 (Atria Smoke Control Systems)
    • NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code)
    • NFPA 291 (Fire Hydrants & Fire Mains)
    • NFPA 1031 (Fire Inspector & Plan Reviewer)
    • NFPA 2001 (Clean Agent Systems)
  • Ability to work in various environments, including office, residential (dorms), commercial, industrial, institutional, and labs (Level I, II, & III)
  • Working knowledge of sprinkler systems (Sprinkler Inspectors License not required)
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting electrical and low voltage systems, including security systems, access control, and fire alarm systems
