About the role

The Fire Investigator studies fire and explosion scenes, determines cause and origin, and conveys findings through written reports. When necessary, they defend their opinions in court.

Responsibilities

• Conduct timely field visits to loss sites for cause and origin investigations.
• Provide honest and unbiased analysis and consultation on fires and explosions.
• Perform daily field studies and research.
• Travel within a 100-mile radius (further when required) from the assigned office; occasional overnight travel may be needed.
• Interact closely with clients, handling sensitive and confidential information.
• Write and submit detailed, accurate reports on completed investigations in a timely manner.
• Communicate with customers to provide timelines and project updates.
• Provide expert testimony and/or depositions as needed.
• Work a flexible schedule during periods of peak business demand.
• Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• CFEI certification through NAFI, or CFI certification through IAAI (preferred).
• Ability to obtain a Private Investigator License in assigned state(s) within 60 days of employment (if applicable).
• Familiarity with NFPA 921.
• Meet all requirements for qualification as a fire investigator per NFPA 1033.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience in fire origin and cause investigations in public and/or private sectors.
• Well-organized with the ability to deliver fast and accurate turnaround times.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and high-stress periods, especially during peak demand.
• Physically able to climb ladders, roofs, and crawl in tight spaces as needed for investigations.
• Adhere to safety protocols and JSAs; meet pre-employment physical examination standards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Team-oriented and service-oriented.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Superior customer service skills.
• Conduct business in an honest and ethical manner.
• Experience writing detailed investigation reports is highly preferred.
• Excellent overall computer skills; meet or exceed company aptitude standards for technical proficiency.
• Ability to work efficiently with little or no supervision.
• Willingness to travel and work a flexible schedule during peak demand.
• Willingness to work remotely from a home office with reliable, high-speed internet.
