Fire Investigator

About the role

As a Part-Time Fire Investigator, you will study fire and explosion scenes, conduct all required studies, and determine the cause and origin of fires and explosions. You will convey findings through detailed written reports and, if necessary, defend your opinions in court.

Responsibilities

• Conduct timely field visits to loss sites for cause and origin investigations.
• Provide honest and unbiased analysis and consultation on fires and explosions.
• Perform daily field studies and research.
• Travel within a 100-mile radius (or further if required) from the assigned office; occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
• Interact closely with clients, often handling sensitive and confidential information.
• Write and submit detailed, accurate reports on completed investigations in a timely manner.
• Communicate with customers to provide project timelines and updates.
• Provide expert testimony and/or depositions as needed.
• Work a flexible schedule during periods of peak business demand.
• Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• CFEI certification through NAFI, or CFI certification through IAAI (preferred).
• Ability to obtain a Private Investigator License in assigned state(s) within 60 days of employment (if applicable).
• Familiarity with NFPA 921.
• Meet all requirements for qualification as a fire investigator per NFPA 1033.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience in fire origin and cause investigations in public and/or private sectors.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and high-stress periods, especially during peak demand.
• Physical ability to climb ladders, roofs, crawl in tight spaces, and lift/move objects up to 100 lbs.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Superior customer service and team-oriented mindset.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong computer skills and technical proficiency.
• Ability to work efficiently with little or no supervision.
• Willingness to work remotely, travel, and maintain a flexible schedule.
• Employee-provided, reliable high-speed internet for remote work.

Qualifications

• Previous expert testimony or deposition experience (highly preferred but not required).
• Degree or some college coursework (preferred but not required).
• Experience with writing detailed investigation reports (highly preferred).
• Meet or exceed company aptitude standards for computer and technical proficiency.
