About the role
The Honolulu Fire Department seeks a Fire Equipment Mechanic to oversee the repair, modification, and maintenance of all firefighting apparatuses, trailers, and rescue equipment.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and overhaul fire apparatus and heavy vehicles, including engines, transmissions, brake systems, axles, and steering components.
- Maintain and repair electrical and electronic systems such as starters, alternators, sirens, emergency lighting, generators, and multiplex engine and transmission controls.
- Fabricate, weld, and modify vehicle components by repairing body frames, pumps, tanks, and structural parts using machine tools and welding equipment.
- Inspect, test, and maintain fire equipment and apparatus, including pumps, piping systems, hoses, and safety systems, and conduct required safety inspections and operational road tests.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities of the position as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience and/or training in maintaining/repairing heavy vehicles, or commercial vehicles weighing over 26,000 pounds (GCWR).
- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine systems, including internal combustion engines and related mechanical components.
- Knowledge of automotive electrical systems and the ability to diagnose and repair electrical components and circuits in vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in using mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment, such as hydraulic presses, lathes, gauges, pullers, and other shop machinery used in vehicle repair.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical defects, perform repairs, and follow technical instructions while working safely and handling heavy equipment and materials.
