Position Summary

The Fire Alarm Service Technician is responsible for installing, testing, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing fire alarm systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. This role supports both new construction and service-related projects by ensuring fire alarm systems are installed correctly, function properly, and meet customer expectations and applicable safety standards.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and repair fire alarm systems and related components.
  • Install and service fire alarm control panels, notification devices, initiating devices, modules, detectors, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform system testing, inspections, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Diagnose and resolve fire alarm system issues in both new construction and service environments.
  • Identify deficiencies and communicate recommended solutions to customers, project managers, and supervisors.
  • Complete service reports, inspection documentation, testing records, and project closeout documentation accurately.
  • Respond to service calls and provide timely technical support in the field.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, contractors, inspectors, and internal teams.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies, NFPA standards, manufacturer requirements, and local codes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
  • Education and/or Experience: The ideal candidate will have experience installing, servicing, testing, and troubleshooting fire alarm systems in commercial, industrial, or institutional environments.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Include experience installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting fire alarm systems. Knowledge of fire alarm control panels, notification devices, initiating devices, modules, and related infrastructure. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, riser diagrams, wiring diagrams, and fire alarm system documentation. Understanding of NFPA codes, fire alarm standards, and industry best practices. Experience performing system inspections, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Experience with fire alarm manufacturers such as Notifier, Edwards, Siemens, Simplex, Silent Knight, or similar systems. Manufacturer certifications are preferred but not required. Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve system issues in both new construction and service environments. Experience using testing equipment and diagnostic tools. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Language, Interpersonal & Leadership Skills: The successful candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with customers, project managers, inspectors, and team members. The ability to read and interpret technical documentation, safety procedures, installation manuals, and project specifications is required. Mathematical Skills: Basic mathematical skills are required, including the ability to perform measurements, calculate material requirements, interpret system layouts, and verify installation requirements. Computer Skills: Candidates should be comfortable using tablets, smartphones, and electronic work order systems for: Time entry, Service documentation, Reviewing project drawings, Completing inspection reports, Recording testing results, Accessing technical documentation. Experience With Electronic Service Management Software Is Preferred.
  • Physical Demands: The physical demands are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The Employee Will Regularly Stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work in confined spaces. Work from ladders, lifts, rooftops, and elevated structures. Install and terminate wiring, devices, panels, and equipment. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier materials with assistance. Operate hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic instruments. Perform repetitive hand movements requiring fine motor skills. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: This is a field-based position supporting commercial, industrial, and institutional fire alarm projects. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may include active construction sites, occupied facilities, mechanical rooms, equipment spaces, and elevated work areas. The position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to OSHA regulations and company safety standards, and flexibility to work overtime, after-hours service calls, inspections, and emergency response situations as project needs require.
