Financial Planning & Analysis Analyst

Homer City Redevelopment LLC · Pittsburgh, PA · 2 days ago
On-siteSalesFull-time

About the role

The Financial Analyst is an important role in Homer City Redevelopment’s growing Finance team. This role will support budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis for a multi-GW combined cycle gas turbine power plant project, working with internal and external stakeholders. A core part of the role is supporting the project’s U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) loan, where accurate forecasting, disciplined reporting and compliance with DOE requirements are critical to the company’s success. It is a unique opportunity to work at an early-stage startup that will rapidly grow into an operator of a major power plant capable of generating billions of dollars of revenue.

In this role, you will be a hands-on member of a lean FP&A team. As a rapidly growing company with a major construction project already underway, we need an analyst who brings real energy to the work – someone who jumps in, picks up whatever needs doing and sees it through. You will have the capacity and the desire to work across the full range of FP&A – from detailed modeling and analysis, to process improvement, systems enhancement and management reporting – with high energy and a positive attitude. No task is too big or too small here, and the analysts who thrive are the ones who volunteer for the next one.

You will provide the analysis and forward-looking insight that helps the company make decisions as it moves through distinct stages in its lifecycle, from a multi-billion dollar construction project through to operating a large power plant. You will help establish FP&A as a trusted partner to Accounting, the other Finance teams, project leaders and the wider company through responsiveness, reliability and a can-do attitude.

Schedule

The Financial Analyst is full-time, and is a 100% in-person role, based in the company’s downtown Pittsburgh office. The role will require occasional travel to the power plant site in Homer City, PA and the company’s office in nearby Blairsville, PA with infrequent travel to other locations.

Responsibilities

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support the annual budget process and maintain rolling forecasts, including 13-week cash forecasts, partnering with department heads and turning around requests quickly
  • Build, update and maintain integrated financial models (P&L, balance sheet and cash flow) that support the long-range plan, funding decisions and Board materials
  • Model DOE loan drawdowns, interest and debt service within the 13-week cash forecast, annual budget and long-range plan, and help keep the funding plan aligned with construction progress
  • Track construction budgets against actuals, including cost-to-complete, change orders and contingency, working directly with Construction, Engineering and Procurement
  • Support the operating budget for the transition from construction to commercial operation, including fuel, O&M and revenue assumptions

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly budget-to-actual variance analysis and management reporting for the CFO, executive team and Board, with clear commentary on drivers and risks
  • Support the DOE loan workstream, including drawdown forecasting and requisition support, covenant and compliance monitoring, and the budget, forecast and reporting information DOE and its advisors require
  • Pitch in on funding requests, debt drawdowns, covenant monitoring and lender reporting, with DOE loan requirements a top priority, alongside Accounting, Treasury and Legal
  • Analyze business cases and commercial arrangements (e.g. PPAs, fuel and O&M contracts), including scenario and sensitivity analysis
  • Be a responsive, reliable source of answers on the company’s budget, forecast and financial performance, and follow up on ad hoc requests quickly and cheerfully

Planning Process & Controls

  • Help document and improve budgeting, forecasting and reporting processes, and keep the FP&A calendar aligned with the accounting close and Board meetings
  • Apply model governance standards, including version control, documented assumptions and peer review
  • Proactively flag financial risks and opportunities, and help respond to auditors, lenders and their advisors with budget and forecast information

Business Partnering

  • Support leaders across Construction, Operations, Legal and Commercial, helping budget owners manage to their budgets
  • Communicate financial insight clearly to non-finance audiences, from site teams to the Board

Systems & Tools

  • Use NetSuite ERP to automate data extraction and reporting, and help maintain FP&A tools and processes
  • Look for ways to cut manual, repetitive work and take the initiative to fix it rather than waiting to be asked
  • Contribute ideas to the Finance team’s overall systems plan

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in FP&A, corporate finance, investment banking, consulting or a similar analytical role (or equivalent experience in a Big 4 firm)
  • Exposure to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) loan financing – for example the Loan Programs Office, drawdown and requisition processes, covenant compliance, or DOE program reporting – is valued and would be a differentiator for this role
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or related field
  • Progress toward or completion of other qualifications, such as CPA, CFA or MBA, would be advantageous but is not necessary
  • Prior experience in a power generation company, public utility or developer of gas fired power stations would be advantageous, but is not required
  • Exposure to FP&A or finance for large scale capital or construction projects. Familiarity with the language of EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and PPAs is a plus
  • Experience tracking budgets against actuals, ideally including cost-to-complete, change orders and forecast-at-completion
  • Strong financial modeling skills (three-statement, cash flow and scenario analysis) and advanced Excel proficiency
  • NetSuite ERP experience is a plus, as is experience with FP&A planning and reporting tools
  • A track record of delivering accurate, timely analysis and reporting that managers and lenders can rely on
  • Clear communicator who can turn complex analysis into concise insight for managers, executives and non-finance audiences
  • Strong collaborator who builds trust quickly with colleagues across Finance, Construction, Operations and Legal
  • High energy and a positive, can-do attitude – you bring enthusiasm to every task, volunteer for work and keep your pace up when priorities shift
  • Genuine willingness to do whatever the team needs, from building a model to chasing
