Financial Operations Analyst
About the role
We are seeking a hands-on Financial Operations Analyst to help build structure, consistency, and documentation across a growing financial operations function. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys taking loosely defined or undocumented processes and turning them into clear, repeatable workflows. The organization is actively maturing its financial operations practices, so the successful candidate will need to be comfortable working in an environment where not every process has already been established and not every assignment comes with a detailed set of instructions. This is a doer-oriented role. You will work directly with Finance, Data, and Operations leaders to understand how processes work today, identify gaps, document them, and create the SOPs, checklists, process maps, and organizational structure needed to make those processes more efficient and repeatable.
Responsibilities
- Document and formalize financial operations processes across multiple functional areas.
- Develop detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) based on existing workflows, stakeholder input, and operational requirements.
- Create clear process maps, workflow documentation, checklists, and supporting materials.
- Partner with Finance and Data leadership to understand current-state processes and translate informal practices into standardized procedures.
- Perform gap analyses to identify missing steps, unclear ownership, process inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Build and maintain master checklists that provide visibility into recurring financial operations activities.
- Establish logical folder structures, naming conventions, and documentation standards to improve organization and accessibility.
- Review existing documentation and improve its accuracy, completeness, usability, and consistency.
- Validate newly documented processes during subsequent operating cycles and make adjustments based on real-world execution.
- Progressively take ownership of documenting additional financial operations areas as initial processes are completed.
- Mapping the current month-end close process from beginning to end.
- Reviewing and improving existing close checklists.
- Developing a comprehensive master close checklist.
- Identifying dependencies, handoffs, missing steps, and unclear ownership.
- Documenting recurring activities such as data loading, validation, reconciliation support, and reporting preparation.
- Creating SOPs for individual steps that currently rely on institutional knowledge or informal instructions.
- Organizing supporting documentation and establishing consistent formatting and storage standards.
- Performing a gap analysis of the existing close process.
- Testing and refining the newly documented process during upcoming close cycles.
- Once the month-end close process has been standardized, the role will move into additional areas of financial operations, such as cash receipts and other recurring operational workflows.
Qualifications
- Experience in financial operations, finance process improvement, business operations, accounting operations, or a similar environment.
- Strong experience creating SOPs, process documentation, workflow maps, and operational checklists.
- Familiarity with month-end close and other recurring finance processes.
- Ability to quickly understand how a process works by interviewing stakeholders, reviewing existing materials, and observing current practices.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to identify process gaps and recommend practical improvements.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly when translating complex or informal processes into clear documentation.
- Comfortable working across Finance, Data, Accounting, and Operations teams.
- Strong Excel skills and general comfort working with financial and operational data.
- Candidates may come from financial operations, accounting operations, business process improvement, finance transformation, or business analysis backgrounds.
- Experience working in an organization that was building or maturing its operational processes is particularly valuable.
- This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys getting into the details, solving operational problems, and helping transform loosely defined financial activities into sustainable, repeatable processes.
Skills
- Comfortable with ambiguity and motivated by creating order from it.
- Able to take an objective such as “document and improve this process” and independently determine the steps needed to move the work forward.
- Resourceful, patient, curious, and comfortable asking questions rather than waiting for a fully defined checklist of assignments.
- Able to work independently without requiring constant direction.
