Job Description

A Financial counselor serves as the liaison between the patient and the practice by coordinating payments, assisting with financial responsibilities, and ensuring compliance with insurance coverage.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains open communication with insurance companies regarding pre-certification and prior authorization processes.
  • Reviews patient schedules and treatment plans to establish financial responsibility.
  • Verifies patient insurance benefits and updates EMR and billing software accordingly.
  • Communicates with patients about insurance coverage and financial obligations.
  • Works with external entities to ensure timely completion of forms and documentation.
  • Assists patients with applying for financial aid and grant programs.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state laws related to patient care, rights, safety, billing, and collections.
  • Manages work area and equipment to maintain a neat and orderly workspace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications And Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Further education or degree preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Two years of prior experience in healthcare field, preferably in a clinical or business office setting required. Prior experience in healthcare customer service, medical terminology, insurance verification, pre-certification, and prior authorization is beneficial.
  • Experience: Excellent verbal and communication skills, proven insurance knowledge including medical terminology, ICD9, ICD10, and CPT codes, cash handling and monetary collection experience, and ability to calculate and collect patients' responsibility and insurance co-pay/coinsurance.
  • Core Capabilities: Critical thinking skills, problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management, and organizational skills. Detail-oriented with the ability to exercise independent judgment. Interpersonal effectiveness, developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation skills, and diversity awareness. Communication skills, good command of the English language, and proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
