Financial Counselor | Oncology

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Regional Financial Counselor who will play a crucial role in ensuring patients receive the care they need across multiple locations. This position follows a hybrid work schedule and will be based out of the office location closest to your residence. After completing approximately three months of training, employees will have the opportunity for some work-from-home flexibility. Occasional travel to other supported locations may be required based on business needs.

Locations Supported: Erie, Greenville, New Castle, Northwest, Shenango Valley, Chautauqua

Responsibilities

• Obtain initial and subsequent prior authorization/referrals as required by specific payers.
• Secure verification of insurance benefits prior to office visits and required treatments.
• Initiate Financial Assessment Application for patients who do not have adequate insurance coverage.
• Work in collaboration with the billing department to resolve open insurance claims as presented by walk-in patients.
• Assist with other office functions as required.
• Evaluate all self-pay patients, as well as those being prescribed non-reimbursable drugs, to determine eligibility for financial assistance through drug reimbursement programs, off-label drug policy, medical assistance, and other applicable programs.
• Demonstrate problem-solving through effective communication.
• Ensure understanding of patient confidentiality with regards to HIPAA Regulations to protect both the patient and the UPMC Cancer Centers.
• Complete the financial counseling process for all patients prior to treatment, including evaluation of patient financial obligations.
• Meet with patients and designated family members to discuss billing issues.
• Utilize the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability Form and obtain appropriate approvals prior to services being rendered.
• Directly assist cancer patients in navigating financial barriers to treatment.
• Help patients access insurance coverage, copay assistance programs, grants, and charity care resources.
• Play a critical role in reducing patient financial stress during a challenging time in their lives.
• Work independently while maintaining support from regional leadership and colleagues.
• Ability to work in a team environment.

Requirements

• Completion of high school diploma or GED.
• 3 years of work experience, preferably in a medical office setting.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, third-party payer rules and regulations, and credit and collections laws preferred.
• Word processing and computer experience required, preferably including EPIC experience.
• Experience with authorizations is preferred.

Qualifications

• Act 34 clearance required.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. No evenings, holidays, or weekends.
