Financial Counselor

About the role

As a Financial Counselor, you will step in when a patient needs support by ensuring financial coverage is cleared for hospital services. You will serve as a patient advocate working collaboratively with social work, case management, and clinical teams to support access to care.

Responsibilities

• See patients in a hospital setting, interacting with 20 to 30 patients per shift by appointment, phone call, or bedside to discuss Charity Care or Medicaid requirements
• Counsel patients on program eligibility and submit applications for timely approval
• Create financial estimates and collect point-of-service payments when appropriate
• Act as a patient advocate, addressing concerns related to billing, access to care, and service quality
• Collaborate with social workers and case management to support funding for discharge planning
• Ensure accurate and timely account updates related to Medicaid, Charity Care, or commercial coverage
• Research and resolve issues that may delay payment or account resolution
• Support quality, productivity, and collection goals while maintaining patient-centered service
• Partner across the revenue cycle and hospital departments to facilitate efficient account resolution

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Available on rotating weekends and holidays
• Available for 37.5 hours per week
• Willingness to report to one of the following hospitals:
  • Monmouth Medical Center – Long Branch, NJ
  • Monmouth Medical Center South – Lakewood, NJ
  • Community Medical Center – Toms River, NJ

Skills

• Strong attention to detail and computer proficiency
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Bilingual skills: English/Spanish, Arabic, Creole, or Portuguese (Preferred)

Pay

$23.04 – $30.73 per hour (Pay Transparency: compensation depends on education, skills, and experience)
