About the role
The Financial Counselor evaluates scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding/coverage issues, assist in applying for Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage, or resources to cover out-of-pocket costs for MUSC Health services, and provide patients with copayments, deductibles, or deposits to be paid before services are rendered.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding/coverage issues
- Assist patients in locating billable insurance coverage, including screening for potential Medicaid eligibility, SSA disability, and/or charity applications
- Notify patients of copayments, deductibles, or deposits prior to services being rendered and collect when applicable
- Provide estimations using the fee estimation tool in Epic
- Aid in the processing of Financial Assistance Program applications
- Obtain and record accurate patient data
- Absorb and comply with all federal and state regulations, including informing patients about available programs (FAP, Cobra)
- Work closely with internal and external peers and communicate at a high level of professionalism
- Interact with state workers and external partners to accomplish work efforts
- Ensure that all patients are appropriately processed and worked for financial counseling
- Understand and interpret credit bureau data
- Communicate effectively, both formally and informally
- Meet departmental established expected metrics for working accounts assigned to patient WQ’s in Epic
- Comply with all MUSC Health Policies and Procedures
Requirements
- High school diploma with two (2) years customer service/collections experience, or bachelor’s degree and one year customer service/collections experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology, and knowledge/understanding of health insurance preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, with knowledge of Epic preferred
- Punctual and dependable, with excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
- Good organizational skills and strong initiative to be goal-oriented

Physical Requirements
- Continuous requirements to perform job functions while standing, walking, and sitting
- Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions
- Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex-safe environment, and work indoors
- Frequently lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 20 lbs unassisted
