About the role

RSM’s Finance and Accounting Outsourcing (FAO) practice blends the best of both worlds by providing candidates with all the career growth opportunities that come with working for a public accounting firm, while operating in private company environments on a daily basis. We provide accounting, technology, and consulting services to private, lower middle-market clients with revenues ranging from $0 to $100 million. We serve as the accounting department for our clients across diverse industries, including technology, life science, not-for-profit, consumer products, and professional service organizations.

This position will work to deadlines and handle a multitude of accounting activities, such as month-end close, financial reporting, year-end audit support, and budget and forecasting activities. You will also learn and efficiently use our best-in-class cloud-based technology stack. FAO Supervisors will engage with clients (CEO, COO, CFO, VP of Finance, Controller, etc.) and other service providers, including tax and professional services.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key point of contact for clients across Purchase to Pay, Order to Cash, and Month-End Close cycles.
  • Lead, manage, and coach client services representatives, associates, and senior associates.
  • Support the client’s month-end close process, including reviewing journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including month-over-month variance analysis and actual-to-budget analysis.
  • Analyze and interpret financial information for client management, providing actionable insights and decision support.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance clients’ monthly operations and suggest process improvements.
  • Understand and leverage our technology stack to drive month-end close efficiencies, including identifying additional add-on processes, systems, modules, and integrations.
  • Define and document repeatable methodologies with appropriate tools and templates for future projects.
  • Establish engagement budgets and direct initial assessments, implementations, and onboarding of new FAO clients.
  • Participate in meetings with new client prospects and in the proposal process.

Requirements

  • Assertive, collaborative, team player with a desire to learn different industries and develop a Controller skill set.
  • Superior ability to prioritize and focus in a dynamic, multi-tasking environment.

  • Professional presentation and strong communication skills, as client contact will be extensive.
  • Interest in personal and professional development and advancement.
  • Dedication to lifelong learning, including staying abreast of best practices in financial management.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret—not just report—financial information to add value to client businesses as a trusted adviser.
  • Solid Excel skills (create tables, use formulas, pivot tables).
  • Hands-on experience with transaction processing and account reconciliation.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to proactively communicate status, issues, conflicts, and priorities across the engagement team.
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously, with strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Progressive experience in accounting and financial management in a corporate accounting environment, in roles such as accounting supervisor, assistant controller, controller, director of finance, or CFO.
  • Strong technical financial accounting (GAAP) knowledge.
  • Strong management accounting and operational finance knowledge.
  • Experience in financial planning and analysis (FP&A), including financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills, with sensitivity to timeframes, budgets, and outcomes across multiple clients/projects.
  • Ability to work independently in a growing, dynamic, fast-paced environment with extensive multi-tasking demands.
