Financial Audit Intern - Health Provider Review- Summer 2027

About Our Program

The Comptroller of the Treasury's Audit Internship Program is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning opportunity offering undergraduate students a chance to witness and participate in the audit operations of the office. Interns will spend the summer building skills through their assignment to an active audit, audit-specific training, and professional development training. Interns will also have opportunities to build relationships with each other through shared experiences.

Responsibilities

• Performing examinations in accordance with attestation standards established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
• Conducting desk reviews, which involve obtaining financial and statistical data from providers and determining the accuracy and reasonableness of the information submitted to our office
• Examining, analyzing, and reviewing records, financial statements, claims data, and cost reports for providers participating in the TennCare Program

Professional Development Activities

• Business Etiquette Day – a full-day session focused on professionalism, emotional intelligence, and understanding one's professional brand, complete with an etiquette lunch led by staff
• Speed networking with full-time employees
• Guided tour of the Tennessee Capitol to explore the state's history
• Weekly cohort check-ins to foster connection and collaboration
• Final presentation showcasing what interns have learned and contributed during their time with the Office

Location

Financial Audit internship opportunities are based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Depending on the audit assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel opportunities are in the Nashville area; however, some may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.

Qualifications

We are seeking students who are rising juniors, seniors, or enrolled in graduate accounting programs and are interested in applying their classroom knowledge to governmental auditing. To qualify for the internship program, applicants should have successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of accounting coursework. Preference will be given to students who have completed intermediate or advanced accounting classes.

About Our Office

The Office of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is responsible for the audit of state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government. In the Comptroller's Office, we strive to deliver on our mission to make government work better.

Compensation

Interns are paid $24 per hour via a third-party company. This position may require in-state day travel to audit sites. Audit-related travel will be reimbursed.
